Ok guys I'm thinking about buying a 198?(80-86 for sure though) F-250 4x4 with a 4 speed and 300. My main question is are the 80-86 F-HD trucks SFA or IFS(I didn't look and I know they are now so I'm hoping they were then)? Also I would like to know how most F-250's with the 300 are equiped, like what is the most common gear ratio, and other stuff, it's a company truck so it will probably be the cheapest of the cheap, with no A/C, I just hope it's got P/S, I have yet to drive it. Thanks in advance.
f-250's had ifs.sometimes the HD rateing ment that the truck is actually a 350, marked as a 250, so that trucks could be in restricted resedentual areas. check the gvw on the door. there was 2 81 f-350 4x4 with duel wheels, and a flat bed with a 300 6 , with sfa at work a while ago. I don't think they were home made
80 thru about 85.5 are all IFS in the front, no matter if they are f250 or f350. 85.5 and up f250's no matter if they are HD or not, are still IFS. The 85.5 and up f350's do have a straight axle in the front.
The lowest ratio the f250's and 350's came with was a 3.55. A lot of them have 4.10's. I would venture to guess a pickup this style with a 300 would definitely have come with a 4.10 gear.
So lets say if it's got 4.10 gears with say 31's and 16 inch rims(I'm guessing on a F250), and being a 4 speed with no overdrive and having a 300 six, it's probably going to rev really high(for a 300) just going down the road at 55 mph isn't it. Can anyone tell me about what rpms it will be at going down the road at 55 or 60 mph, and wether or not it will hurt the 300, and if it will have any power at those rpms.
Not being a jerk, just trying to lessen the confusion for those that don't understand ratio's, they can be very confusing.

3.55 is lower than 4.10 isn't it?
About the 4.10's, yes your 300 six will be screaming at interstate speeds, but that's going to be the nature of the beast. You can't have your cake and eat it too with the 80-86 trucks, since they didn't come with a overdrive tranny in the larger trucks. Now go to a little bit later truck and get a zf 5 speed overdrive and the situation improves. Or get one with a 460, and you can run a 3.55 gear and be alright.
