I've known about the Heavy Duty 300 for a long time, but have gotten several differant answers about what makes it an HD. I'm not even going to waste my time posting what I do know about it, because I'm probably wrong. My truck supposedly has an HD engine, atleast that's what it says in my VIN, and I know it hasn't been changed out, so it's still an HD.
What does the valve cover look like? Any special stampings?
Thanks in advance!

Well, the 2 stock HD 300's I've seen have been non emissions(no cat), no air pump, no egr valve, a spacer under the carb instead of the egr mount, a single hose PVC valve, a stamped steel alternator mount instead of the cast crap alt/air pump one on a regular 300, ~5 vacum hoses, a heavy duty cooling system, Duraspark II, and a very neat vacum diagram/emissions sticker. I have one, and if I can find a replacement, I'll post the part number and where I got it.

What year's were these engines Evan? 70's? I'm very sure that they had to have some emissions junk in the 80's, even if it was something as simple as an EGR valve, or something else like that. I read a story that said something about all Ford trucks having PCV, and EGR valves by 1980. It said it was part of the whole new package, new looks, slightly updated engines, and emissions. If I find the story, I'll give you a URL, or just email it to you.
Thanks for giving me your view on this.

No, not 70's, one was in an 85 F150, and the other was a '83(the one I got my tranny out of,)I have all the non-emissions stuff on my truck now, except for the emissions sticker/vacum diagram, which I can't find a replacement for.

I first found out about the HD 300 when I borrowed a Ford Truck engine manual from the library. I believe it was a '78 manual. It stated that the HD version had a forged steel crank, heavy duty pistons and valves, and a heavier duty cooling system. All this I am sure of, having written it down from the manual for future reference (good thing too. It seems the library deep sixed the manual not too long after I borrowed it. Too bad I didn't just lose it in my basement junk pile instead.) I think the HD only ran to about 1980 or so. There are old messages on this site about the HD you may want to search for.
My 76-86 Chiltons manual only lists the 300 HD in the vin decoding for 79, but it lists re-build specs for it up 'till 82, and I know that the 83 I pulled my tranny from had the HD 300, I started to tear it apart last night, It has to be re-ringed, the guy who owns it decided to put it back to work on his farm, he's gonna need a transmission.....

I am going to begin searching for a HD 300-six, and would appreciate any type of external ID. What, for example, is the VIN code identifier on your OEM vehicle? Engine block casting numbers would probably help, though I doubt there is any difference between LD and HD versions. The emissions decal is important, too, but decals apply to OEM, not to subsequent changes.
What weight rating did that engine come standard in? F-600?
I remember reading a 300 buildup by Ak Miller in Hot Rod Magazine in the late Sixties; that article stated that a forged steel crank and HD rods were the upgrade from standard. I assume that HD low-compression pistons and sodium-cooled exhaust valves were in there, too.
