some maintenance info ??

I purchased a wrecked 94 F350 reg cab dually turbo idi 5spd late last summer. It has a 5T Smeal well pump hoist on it and a 9' utility bed. It was hit on the utility bed and just got it repaired and on the road. There was no owners manual in it but I also have 95 & 97 powerstroke and 95 460 - all F250s so I am familiar with these beasts.

My questions are:
engine oil capacity - 10 qts put it almost to the full?, used to 14 in psd
oil filter - regular or heavy duty? I put a reg on it but had a bigger one.
oil change interval - does the idi like frequent changes like the psd?
fuel filter change - interval?
fill the fuel filter - was hard to start after change, do you fill with fuel?

This truck is 4wd and 4:10 gears. I just had it to a job in TX. It weighs 10,400# and with my cargo I was 12,000 total weight. It has about 200K on it and I ran 65 to 75 on the highway. It used 1.5 quarts of oil in 2250 miles, has good power and averaged 12.5 to 13 mpg. I was impressed with the turbo idi. Is the oil consumption average for one with these miles? This truck is used alot stationary so the hourmeter has 3400 on it but doesnt work any more. This truck is occassional use but I am happy with it

Thanks Ron Stauffer

I use the powerstroke filter and 1 more quart of oil.
I change mine from 3 to 5000 miles depending on use on that pulling unit I wouldn't go over 3000 miles would be best to get you hour meter and do 3000 hours.
I change my fuel filter when I change the oil but could probably get by every other oil change.
Allways fill your fuel filter to the brim I fill mine with howes instead of diesel.
Your oil consumtion doesn't sound that bad for the miles and no telling how many hours however the cdr sometimes gets over looked and never serviced on these and can cause oil consumption.

1. Yupp 10 quarts fills her up, but as Star already said, I would get the filter for the 7.3 PSD, it holds 1 more quart and has a smaller micron rating

2. For my filter I use nothing but motorcraft, I believe the number is FL1995 for the PSD filter.

3. I change my oil 3K to 4K miles,

4. I change my fuel filter every 10,000 miles cuz at 40 bucks a pop they get pricey.

5. I fill my filter with either ATF, Diesel Kleen (silver), or Lucas fuel treatment. Also to make her easier to start, get her to operating temp, then change the filter, also I floor her when trying to start her after a filter change cuz sometimes you can get her fired up on the first try.

6. That really ain't bad oil consumption, but as star said, check you CDR.

I keep forgettin about the cost for the 7.3 fuel filter I only have 1 7.3 and I changed it over to the old style for that very reason.

Thanks for the advice star & dean. I am glad I can use the same oil filter for all the diesels.

I have to ask: what is a cdr and how do I service it? I am totally new to the idi. Also, can you lubricate the throttle linkage? Mine seems to bind coming off idle and I had it stick to the floor once.

Star, where are you in NM? When I left Lubbock to head home, I went thru Clovis to Santa Fe up to Antonito CO to get home.

Thanks Ron

65 miles straight north of clovis on I40 you probably went thru ft sumner and west of me.
I made the trip from clovis to antonito many times when I was going with my wife she lived just out of antonito I belive it was called fox creek her folks owned at that time what everybody called the pink place a resteraunt and store and station by the conejos river. (probably long gone now)

The CDR is that tuna can on top of the drivers side valve cover with a 3/4" tube running to the turbo intake from it..

Remove it and soak it in a can of gasoline while you change oil.

Aggitate it from time to time so it breaks up all of the oil inside that turns to tar and keeps it from closing.

Do not blow compressed air through it or the diaphram will be ruptured requiring replacement.
CDR should be serviced every other oil change.

For your fist service you may have to soak it for a while if it has not been serviced regularly, takes a bit more time to disolve the tar inside.
Clean looking metal inside, you are good to go.

Colorado some years we built a gold mine up in your country at san luise.
I don't know about nowadays but in those days san luise wasn't much for white folks or any folks that were even from the next town.

I serviced the CDR and it had been serviced regularly by the looks of it. I just saw the idi has external glow plugs, I may really learn to like this truck. Anything else I should know about for maintenance? Is the owners manual for the idi good enough that I should look for one?

Star, I have done some work down that way close Chama CO outside of San Luis. Yes, there still is a lot of old country Spanish influence in that area. That still is a good ways away from me as I travel on to Alamosa, then Monte Vista up the valley to Saguache, over Cochetopa Pass to Gunnison and then 60 miles west to Montrose. Most of my work is in the beautiful high country of CO so I dont complain about the windshield time.

Thanks Ron

This is the best owners manual that I know of some of the guys have taken detailed pictures of nearly every component and are a great bunch of guys.

One word of warning on those glowplugs replace only with motorcraft beru plugs the other brands are prone to swell and when you try to remove them can break the tips off. Then a head comes off to get thi tip off the piston.
The only other thing is keep your water tested and the additive up as the 7.3's can have a cavitation problem.
