Motor Swap

First time post on this forum, but have been on the next forum up as I have two 95s and a 97 PSDs. This question is about my early 94 turboed IDI F350 4wd utility bed 5 spd with a PTO driven Smeal pump hoist on it. It has about 200K on the motor but a lot more motor hours since its use is stationary with the pump hoist. I bought a wrecked 97 PSD awhile back for parts. It is automatic. I planned keep the PSD for this truck. So my questions are:

Will the existing T IDI 5 spd bolt right up to the PSD?

What all do I need to keep from the 97 to make the swap?

Are there enough benefits to going to a PSD because it would be easier to put in a rebuilt IDI?

The PSD going in would have 180K and I already own it. How pricey is a rebuilt T IDI?

This truck has been my only exposure to a T IDI. It has good power and economy for a 12,000 lb truck.

Thanks

1. Yes, the bellhousings are the same

2. Tons of wiring, being that the IDI's are completely mechanically controlled, unlike the PSD

3. Being is that your IDI is already turboed, I would rebuild the IDI, especially due what kind of abuse you are dishing out.

4. I dunno exactly (luckily I have yet to have to do anything major to her), but Dave S. has a IDI that you will drool over that I think he spent 4500 to rebuild (hey you priced a PSD rebuild lately)

5. I have to agree, I've yet to be around a turboed IDI, but so far been very impressed with my IDI, she may not be the fastest, but she's always there and always consistent.

i would almost say that daves produces more power then them new 6.4 powstrokers do. i cant say for sure but i bet he makes that much or more, if you want some thing that will have some power rebuid the idi lower the compression stud the heads intake and exaust manifolds and put about 25 psi boost and lots of fuel (and lots of money) and than see how many psd's and cummins and duramax keep up, sorr if i was preachin lol

I do wish Dave would put his truck on a dyno, because I have a feeling its throwing some crazy numbers down.

On a side note, not trying to steal the thread, but there's some guy down the General Automotive that is claiming that I could replace my 88 with a 09 F150, because on paper it can do the same work, I'm now leaving that one along. Evidently he has never worked with an IDI then tried working with a 5.4 gasser.

Hey guys, thanks for the info. I may rethink keeping the PSD for this truck because of Dean88's reply. So, the IDI has a mechanical throttle vs the TPS of the PSD? That is important because the pump hoist has a switch at the back of the truck that hits a solenoid that increases throttle to run the hoist faster. I would have to change the fast idle setup to one for a PSD.

Also, if I kept the truck old school, it would follow suit as I set vintage ranch water pumping windmills with it. The parts truck has been setting around for 8 months since I got all the first parts I wanted off of it (alloy wheels, 40-20-40 seats, LS axle and manual hubs). A guy is buying the auto out of the parts truck tomorrow as I have all 5 spds. Another person is bugging me for the motor. I may let it go since the ones I have are between 100-130K and shouldnt need a motor any time soon. Is it the wrong forum to ask what a used PSD with 180K is worth?

Thanks Ron

I've heard of them going for around $1500, but I'm no expert.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
