Need help identifying a funny sound

I hope someone else has had this proplem, and can help me out. I need some ideas on a strange sound i am having. It sounds like when you have oversized tires on and when you turn sharp, the tire rubs the frame. Sounds just like it.

It only does it when you accelerate and turning from a stop. It is not the tires rubbing. Did it before I got new tires and still doing it and I have stock size tires. I am not turning the wheel all the way. The harder you accelerate, the more pernouced the sound it. It is worse when I am pulling my trailer.

I have checked everything i can think of. nothing is rubbing on the tires, springs, shocks, shackles, ball joints, tie rods all good. (I just did the ball joints) Has new front end alignment. It has been doing it for quiet some time. Does NOT seem to be getting worse, but I dont put that many miles on it a year either. I am leaving for a trip with my trailer in 2 weeks and hope i can find the couse of this noise.

Any ideas??

From a stop, cut the wheel the all the way over and gun it. If the truck hops, skips or jumps, it's the differential locking the two tires at the same velocity. When I had my stock diff rebuilt, it was pretty bad about doing this.

Another thing to check for is play on the pinion. Grab the yoke and wiggle it, you shouldn't be able to deflect it by hand much if at all. If the noise is a loose pinion, your most likely in for a complete rear end rebuild. Usually they howl before rattling though.

You may also want to pull the calipers and grease the slide pins. It shouldn't make that kind of noise, but it wouldn't hurt to do either.

There is no play in the yoke, so i think the pinion is ok. I was thinking of changing the diff lube.....maybe that would help....i dont know.

Funny you metion the slider pins. Was doing my brakes yesterday, and the passanger side sliders are froze up. Still working on getting them freed up so i can take them out and replace them.
Thanks for the suggestions!!

Listen for the noise once you get the brake job done. If the caliper was frozen, it probably held the pad at an odd angle and the pad chattered at you drove. If you have them mostly freed, remember that the brake system can exert hundreds of pound of pressure. Tap the caliper in on the pins then press the brakes has hard as you can. It should start them wiggling.

While you are working on the brakes, check the hubs out to make sure you don't have a bearing on the way out. They growl pretty good when they get loose and can make noise at different times....

Thanks.....I had checked them. I had replaced both about a year or so ago, but that was one of the things i checked.....no play in them what so ever.

Well, I got my brakes done and I cant get it to make the noise. I hope that was the problem. I will know if it is as soon as i hook up to my trailer as it always did it when i pull it. we will see......im crossing my fingers that it took care of the problem!!

What all did you replace? Did you just do pads, or did you do the whole thing, ie: rotors, calipers, pads, pins, etc? Thanks for the update....

I did pads, rotors and new hardware including pins. The pins on the passanger side we both froze and one pin on the drivers side was froze.

Is the noise in the front or rear? Is it only when you turn the wheel what way? It COULD be the rear bearings. Very fast fix. Just did my rear axle seals on a brake job gone hellish. I ended up doing all 4 rotors and all 4 calipers. Thank god for the lifetime warranty from autozone on those calipers... and front and rear pads just because I was so...angry for lack of better terms. it seems these pins lock up frequently. Is this noise even in the drive train? Can you hear it OUTSIDE the vehicle when its doing it? Have someone outside and have get it to do it 4 times. have the person outside the SUV stand at all 4 corners and tell you where its coming from! Or, take it to the dealer, Have a tech go for a test drive with you. Spend the 95 bucks for the hours labor, let him figure it out, get the estimate from ford, chuckle a bit say thank you pay your bill and go to the parts store.

I know all the wheel bearings are good. I may just have to take it in and pay someonw to figure it out. I think I will wait until I do the back brakes though. I am most certain that the slider pins are froze up in the rear. I have never had the brakes off in the rear since i have owned this truck. I now know that greesing up the slider pins twice a year needs to be part of my routine maintainace. I doubt that is it, but at lease i have done everuthing i can do to find the noise!!
