Got the CEL just came on. Insufficient EGR flow, anyone had the EGR valve & tubes off to clean & fix this problem? I think mine has the sonic EGR valve (measures valve position only). Last time I had the EGR pipe off it was surprisingly clean for 300,000 kms. I did notice a bit of slightly uneven operation at low throttle or coasting conditions (foot barely on the gas). Shortly after I noticed this, under a bit of rapid acceleration, the CEL came on.
Any ideas ? I'm going to check the vacuum control line first I think.
Aeroman.
I was wrong, just had a closer look this engine has the 2 side pipes & conventional aluminium DPFE sensor. It looks like I can get to it, but not sure if I can test it yet? The plug is quite far back, I'm going to lose some skin I just know it!
Would be good to test the sensor before trying to remove the EGR system.
my usual problem is torn belly from the hood catch.
look over the vac. hoses to the DPFE closely, they break down.
or a corroded thru exhaust feed pipe to EGR
sounds like 96 3L and my 4L are much the same EGR setup.
mechanic gloves help. at least they contain the blood until finished
The 96 system must be different cause when you get the code you just replace the sensor. The metal sensors corrode and fail. I think I've done 2 on my 96's 4.0L. Same thing with the purge sensor.

Funny I didn't see this post 1st time around.. I would just replace it. The egr pipes rarely come off easy...
