I have a 96 5.0L and cleaing the EGR valve didn't do me any good. I had to replace it. The code specifically indicated the EGR vale. I tried replacing the regulator and sensor first, on the advice of the service writers, but the problem remained until I replaced the EGR valve.

JONALD, did you change the EGR valve yourself & if you did how difficult was it.

Do a search on DPFE sensor or PFE (depends on year of the X). This is a big cause of EGR CELs and is usually the cause, not the EGR valve itself. I just changed mine last week...took 20 minutes and CEL is not gone.

Yeah. I did it myself. It is a pain to get to, but not overly complicated. I put some foam over the fenders and some plywood on that for a platform to lay accross while doing it. It is located on the passenger's side, between the engine and firewall and it is a pretty tight space. I couldn't get a socket wrench in to get a socket on the bolts so I cut one of my cheap (Wilmar) box end wrenches down and used another box end wrench on it for leverage. Once the bolts were loose, I could turn them with my fingers. I don't remember the wrench size off the top of my head but if it is important, I can find the modified wrench. I was able to slide sockets in until I found the right size, just not the wrench.

I second the DPFE sensor idea... I think that fords are maybe more famous (at least for mechanics) for having bad DPFE sensors (hell, Ford just extended the warranty on a bunch of 'em... mine went bad 5000 miles outside the extended warranty, and it's only a 2002! These will cause codes to pop up that "look like" an EGR issue. It's fairly simple to check the sensor, I believe... I got those codes, and I just bought another senson (only about 20.00 or so).. cleared the codes, she runs like a champ now. I did note that the replacement sensor appeared to be a different design, so hopefully this one will last longer.

e-manfive: Which EGR code did you get? Was it a KOEO, KOER, or CM code? KOEO just about have to be electrical as these codes are set with the engine off, which means a bad/dirty EGR valve can't cause a KOEO code. If you're not certain which code(s) you get, review the EEC-IV self-test instructions under tests at www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html and repeat the test, if necessary.

mrshorty:thanks,as i remember it was done with both key on,not running/and engine running.a snap on code reader was used, and he said the only code that came up was ( thirtysomething).the thirty- was the only code that refered to the egr valve, acording to the code reads with his snap on unit.thanks.and thanks to everone.

sorry to sneak into your thread here e- manfive, but I've got similar issues myself and a couple questions....

Replaced the EGR valve already and am still getting the same KOEO codes (332, 335), which is fitting right in with these thoughts on the DPFE issue. (also throwing KOER 326)
I'm assuming the DPFE sensor is the "box" mounted just forward of the EGR valve (talking about a 94 4.0L)....looks to be the only piece integrated into the EGR system aside from the valve it's self....but doesn't match a picture I came across talking about the DPFE. correct?

What does the sensor consist of inside? Can I spray it down with brake cleaner?

Thanks,
jw

From what I've heard, when the DPFE fails, it corrodes internally.

difference in the picture could be the style of valve. Not sure what kind of sensor was used (PFE, DPFE, ??) on the '94, EGR sensors come in several different flavors depending on what the engineers decided on that year.

KOEO (unless your confusing KOEO with CM codes -- they are both output during the KOEO test) just about have to be electrical, so the EGR valve itself can't cause a KOEO code. That's why you resolve KOEO codes first.

335 was KOEO, 332 was CM.....

I'll probably pull the DPFE off there tomorrow....should only take a couple minutes, and take a look inside it.

any idea what price runs on those? (probably go to ford or figure somewhere like autozone would have it?) See $20 listed earlier....hopefully that's right!

now I wished I would have done some research here before I started messing with this thing. Haven't dealt with the 4.0L much at all...and haven't had to troubleshoot problems much at all...ever. other car is a 112K mile 4.6L in a Tbird.....no problems. wonder...that fit in the explorer?

Well, the DPFE on my 2002 Exploder is a small 2x2.5 " box that sat up high (about even w/ the air intake plenum).. had one electrical connector, and two hoses hooked to it (they come up from the EGR pipe, I think).. it really wasn't "integrated" into anything else (may be different on earlier models) ... the new sensor was a little bigger... FWIW I don't think you can "see" inside of these things... and yes, the replacement was pretty cheap somewhere in the range of 20 to 30 bucks, I think.
