I have installed a volare front end on my '53 and need to hook up the steering box to the steering column. The shaft out of the steering box measures 5/8 with 36count spline. In my search for u joints, I noticed some of the suppliers have a 5/8-36 and some say 5/8-36 chrysler. Some of them do not differ. My question, will any 5/8-36 work or do I need the one that are spacfic to chrysler? Thanks for the help.
Ricky
The 36 spline GM and 36 spline Chrysler joints ARE DIFFERENT. I figured it out when I put a volare ifs under my 56. As best I can explain it... Chrysler left a smooth section on the shaft that would be about the equilavent of 2 or 3 splines then the 36 splines make up the rest of the diameter of the shaft. I think GM shafts are splined all the way around. That means the Chrysler splines are "finer" than the GM. I hope this makes sense.
Ok, thanks for the replies. jniolon, that is just about the way mine looks, except I used a column out of a '74 F100, with the shifter on the column. It has a rag joint at the bottom (I know, I might have to cut it off, but I'm trying to work with it.) Thanks
Thomc, I think I understand, and that's what I needed to know. Probably saved me about $70 bucks. Thanks.
Got mine from Mid-Fifty. Check their catalog. They show different part numbers for the Volare and GM u-joints.
The pre-77 GM boxes were 36 spline with 13/16 inch shaft.
The Volare/Corvair/Vega were 36 spline with 5/8 inch shaft.
Mid-Fifty will also have the other end for your Ford column and a short shaft to go between the two u-joints.
I got rid of the rag joint.
The Mid-Fifty joints are real nice. Almost look like polished SS. Not sure of the brand, maybe Borgeson. Price was same or better than Borgeson web site.
