volare steering connection

It is time to connect my steering column and Volare steering box . I had figured on buying a joint from Borgeson or Flaming River . I have seen pictures that show what appears to be a factory joint being used . They look different from the joint that came with my suspension . Does anyone know what Chrysler models use a short coupler between the column and box? I actually don"t know what my suspension came out of as many Chrysler products uesd the same set-up , like Cordobas , Miradas , others. Maybe the other models used a different joint/shaft. What have some of you done ? Thanks.

Hi,

I used a Borgeson joint at both ends. If you look in my steering column gallery you can see a picture of my install. The column is a flaming river.

I used a Flaming River U-joint on my Chrysler column to the Volare PS box on my 48 F-3.

Thomc,

if you're confused by the rag joint connector on the steering box...you remove it... pull the little plastic pin that goes thru the connector (like a roll pin) and the whole thing will come off... leaving a nice 5/8" 40 spline short stubby shaft coming out of the top of the steering box. Mine came with a clunk looking sleeved metal connector that mounted to the steering with a shaft (movable) that extended out of that to a flat flange that made up a rag joint connection

like this
volare rag joint

Both Borgeson and Flaming River sell a univ joint that has 5/8"-40 on one end and whatever you want on the other... usually 3/4 " 36 spline (I think)

you can see my volare steering set up here...

tilt steering install article

about halfway down the page there are two pics of the steering connection

I think I used a 5/8"-40sp - 3/4" 36 sp... then a 4.5" 3/4 shaft... then a 3/4"-36sp to a 1"40 sp (gm column size)..

I might still have the 5/8-3/4 coupler if you're interested... I have no use for it now...

hope it helps

John

I used borgeson spline to 3/4" "double d" to the interediate shaft, and then a 3/4 x 3/4 Double D tothe Ididit column. No problems at all.

With the GM column I want to use I will be going from 3/4-36 splines to the volare , which I have found to be 5/8-36 splines . I will be using a straight coupler on the column and connecting to a short ( 5 inches if I remember correctly) shaft then connecting to the top end of the joint at the steering box . I was just trying to figure if something factory would work to avoid buying the $100.00 parts from Borgeson.Thanks.

Thomc,

seems like I remember a friend several years ago who used the univ joints from front wheel drive half shafts... and made up his own u-joint/shaft section... don't remember the details but might warrant a look in the scrap yards

later

Thomc, now and then it is just a lot simpler to bite the bullit and pay out the beak to get exactly what you need to get the job done and get the peace of mind that comes with it as a bonus. I feel this way when it comes to steering and brake parts and when the weird parts are pre-engineered and a phone call away. The extra money is usually worth it to avoid the extra grief and chasing around. Plus, you get new parts that don't need cleaning up. I view it as an extra day closer to driving it.
