i have a 1993 f150 xl. it has dual fuel tanks. my rear tank pupm works but my fuel gauge dont work, my front pump does not work but my gauge works. i dont want to spemd 150 bucks on a new pump for the front so i was wandering if there was anyway to somehow put an inline fuel pump that would draw fuel from just the front tank so i have a fuel gauge? thanks
The 85-89 EFI trucks had a frame mounted pump that serviced both tanks. You could convert your current ITR (in-tank reservoir) setup to the older setup (I did this on my '90 F150 to accomodate a large replacement tank) but you would need the whole shebang from a donor truck, including the low-pressure in-tank primer pumps and reservoir/switch and of course the frame-mounted high-pressure pump. You might prefer just replacing your front ITR pump to all that.
I think you are asking can you just go to the parts store and get one of those Holley electric pumps for $40 and the answer is no - they do not produce enough pressure.
ok thanks. and yes i was thinking that i could use one of them pumps. so what would cause the fuel gauge when on the rear tank to read full when i put like 3 gallons in it. i know it its the sending unit. so could i take the rear pump apart and take the pump itself out and put in the front tank?
I have a 6.9 diesel so not familiar with the gas setup but why not replace the sending unit in the rear tank?
Also the fuel pumps in Chevy trucks are junk and I know that a lot of guys just fit a frame mounted pump to save any more bother so I would think it is possible but as stated you would need a high press. one.
the truck is just an ole beater so i dont wanna dump much money since i laid off right now. would the front pump and the back pump be the same pump. my front tank is a 19 gal. and my back tank is a 18.2 i think.
On these trucks the fuel sending unit consists of the pump which is housed inside a plastic resovoir that also contains check valves, and on the outside of that there is a float which is the fuel level sender. This float is the part that is failing on your truck so your fuel gauge won't work until this part is replaced, adding an exterior fuel pump will have no effect on it.
when i put fuel in my front tank my gauge works but the pump dont. i was just wandering if i could take the rear pump apart and take the pump itself out of the plastic case and put it in the front tank? sorry i dont know much bout the fuel systems in these trucks.
I had a look and RockAuto do a fuel sender unit for around $35.00 so that is one option.
However I would have a look at the wiring at the tank. You could have a bad ground or other connection.
I don`t like the sound of trying to modify pumps as you might end up with both tanks not working.
If you look at the photo posted by Conanski you will see the sender unit. It is a little box with the floar arm connected to it. It may be possible to open that. The sender usually is just a coil of fine wire with a "wiper" contact sliding along it attached to the float arm. Quite often the problem is that the wiper has worn or moved away from the coil. If the wiring connections check out it might be worth trying to fix the sending unit.
Just my thoughts.

Yes that is possible both tanks use the same pump. Here's an exploded view of the sending unit, there is at least 1 screw in the top cover of the resovoir, it will accessable after the hard lines are removed. Then you need several flat screwdrivers and a lot of patience to get the assembly apart.
thanks for all your input guys i really appriciate it. I dont really feel confortable to take it aprart and tinker with it. as soon i get my snowmobie sold i think i going put a new sending unit in the back and replace the whole assembly in the front. i was just trying to save myself a couple hundred buck but thabks alot guys
