Hey everyone. Well my truck wouldnt turn over for a bit and I found that it was the linkage that runs down the top of the steering column. I think it connects the ignition key to the...little black box lower on the column. anyone ever played around with these parts. anyway to adjust it? To get my truck to turn over I have to push on the linkage with a pair of plyers. Maybe just a new key and ignition tumbler? Please help.
How does the linkage work? Turn the key and you get radio ect. but no cranking of motor? If so there is a wishbone shaped thing that is connected to the tumbler that activates the linkage. That wishbone is made of pot metal and is prone to breaking. The part is cheap to buy but replacing it is a pain. Not to hard to do but a pain. You have to remove the steering wheel and the coller that holds the tumbler and pull the pins for the tilt if you have a tilt colum. The wishbone is held on to the tumbler assemblyby a roll pin if I remember right. Like I said not to hard just a pain. hope this helps Tom
I had the same problem with my 88. The rod was broken. You have to get the piece (rod ) from ford. There was also another piece in there that looked kind of like a flat gear with a slot for the rod. I paid like 40.00 for both pieces IIRC. I did not replace it though had a mechanic do it. Mine is a tilt wheel and I don't know if the gear piece is only in tilt wheels or not. The mechanic says they are a PITA though. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
These guys are all correct. The linkage down to the ign/start switch is a PITA. However to answer one question the ign/start switch is adjustable, just loosen the two holding screws.
The part that usually breaks is the ignition switch actuator and you do need to pull the steering wheel to replace it. By the sound of it your key switch is OK.
When i turn the key forward to the acc. position. the radio and everything comes on. when i turn the key forward, nothing. the key does push the rod forward but its like it doesnt push it far enough. If it is such a pain, maybe ill just through in a push button start. lord knows i have enough switches and ***** and buttons as it is!
I always thought that this set up was like a Rube Goldberg cartoon. How many steps to preform a simple chore. It sure sounds as if that cheap wishbone thing has broken. To replace it is not hard just a royal pain. Just pay attention to how thing come apart. The hardest part for me was getting the tilt springs and pins back in place. Good luck!
