i received my shocks today. i installed them...took about 40 minutes. so far they feel good. that being said the shocks that came out would compress and not rebound and you could extend them and they would stay in that position. shockwarehouse was good to deal with and i would buy from them again.

btw all my shocks were installed boot down. steel b ushing in the lower mount. that correct...right?

The front should be boot down - Bilstein shocks and struts for cars and trucks - Shockwarehouse.com.

The rears should not - Bilstein shocks and struts for cars and trucks - Shockwarehouse.com.

so are the stickers upside down on the rears? i installed them with the metal bushings in the same location as the ones i took out. also does it make sense that i was able to compress the rears with my hands but the fronts were rock hard. i needed a floor jack to install the fronts. thanks.

Ed, that is correct. I have not heard of being able to compress the shocks by hands. How are they reacting when you drive? Do they feel soft?

I'm not familiar completely with Trailmaster's. We are a distributor of Bilstein's, Edlebrock, KYB, Monroe and Rancho shocks and Monroe brake pads.

its hard to tell because the old ones were junk. i definitly can compress them by hand. when they were delivered one of the plastic bands was off the shock so the shock pushed through the bilstein box and the outer brown box. i thought nothing of it and installed them. the fronts were rock hard.

I have had Gabriel's, Monroe's, Trailmaster and maybe I have huge biceps but I have always been able to compress them by hand.

The straps are intended to keep the shock from expanding. The delivery person must have really did a number for that to happen.

Also, some shocks are harder to compress than others. The fronts will be harder because of the weight they are bearing (engine). Although you may carry some weight on the rear they should be 'softer' to some extent.

i called bilstein today. there tech guy said compressing the rears is normal and the front should be rock hard. he also said boot down on front and the rears can go either way. i'm keeping mine boot down so the metal sleeves are in the same position as the shocks that came out.(bottom mounts) if anyone has any ques heres there phone # 858-386-5900 just ask for tech.

Ed,

That makes total sense about the shock compression. Interesting about the rears can go either way though (boot up or down). They've never specified this, nor does their manuals state they can be flip flopped. Thanks for posting.
