i have a 1977 f-100 custom with a c4 and the stock column shifter. the piece in the steering column that holds the selector in the desired gear is worn out and it slips out of park. I have been told by multiple parts stores and dealerships that the part is no longer made. Any Suggestions?
Install a floor mounted shifter. I had lots of problems with my column shifter not going into the gear I wanted, so I finally gave up and got a B&M ratchet shifter (however, you can go with any brand you prefer).
Get the aftermarket shifter like shameless says, if yours has not dropped into reverse while idling from park it will someday, at least mine only took out a hundred feet of fence including corner posts and got hung up on an old trailer toungue they had laying out there before it got to the neighbours house.. That would have been bad!!

Welcome to FTE
I assume you are speaking of the detent, aka shift gate that bolts to the lower half of the upper steering column flange.
The tab on the shift lever fits between the shift gates.
When the lever is placed into Park BEFORE the hand brake is set when the truck is parked on an incline, the truck will roll forward (or backward) an inch or two.
This causes the shift lever's tab to become locked into the detent.
When this occurs...the lever has to be YANKED out of park.
Sooner or later, the individual gate between Park and Reverse snaps off.
This can also cause the parking pawl located inside the transmission to break into two pieces = not pleasant!
This was a FoMoCo dealer part only, no autoparts store will have it.
