Right now I am looking at a 1991 Ford F150 that seems pretty nice. The thing has a 5.0L V8, and I am wondering if I buy it, what would need to be replaced to go from RWD to 4WD? I figure this would be semi expensive, but I am up for it if it is cheaper than a different 1991 F150 with 4WD already in it. Thanks
Here is my input, since I will be making a 4x4 conversion over this next summer. The most important thing to know is that it CAN be done. Since you are starting with an F150, and you did not say that you want a straight axle in the front, then a TTB may be OK for you. If you go to the tabs at the top of the page where it says "articles/specs", that will take you to a new page where you click on "transmission/axle", then select the article called "2x4 to 4x4 for '80 to '96 F-100/150's ". In that article, you will find that it is essentially a bolt on swap for twin traction beam only, but will give you 4 wheel drive. Here is the link (not sure if it will work): https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/..._F100150s.html
If you want something heavier for whatever reason, I recommend the fullsizebronco.com forum - they have an entire forum and sticky threads loaded with info that is just for putting a straight axle into a half ton truck. It is really good stuff, but in my opinion seems geared toward barely streetable trucks. But one thing I have to say, is that the guys on these forums are very talented and make some amazing suspensions. I am just not sure how well these trucks would handle potholes at 60 mph.
My approach for my truck is not as common (at least in these forums and such), but I will be swapping the frame entirely. I have many reasons, mostly that I can put a road worthy frame under my truck that has been properly engineered and had several design aspects incorporated that are not likely considered in a garage on a Friday night over a 12 pack and a welder. I just bought a truck with a rusted out body for nearly nothing that I can tear down and totally go over the frame and make it almost brand new.
The most important thing is to do your research. I bought a few books off of EBay that are Ford publications that have things like frame dimensions, measurements, driveline angles, you name it. Before I undo one bolt, I intend to have a plan and a goal, and I really think that $50 spent on books and figuring out that my plan won't work is better than buying a $1000 Dana 60 front axle and finding out that I can't use it.
Last but not least, it is a shame when somebody asks for advice or help and the only responses say just do something different (like "just buy a 4x4") without reason. That is not what these forums are for - I suggest that if someone thinks it's a bad idea, explain your answer so the person that started the thread has something additional to work with.
Thanks freakazoid, I will check out that link. I think I am just going to buy an F150 thats 4x4 stock. I also didn't think of buying a book for the truck on ebay, thats a really good idea, thanks.
