My friend has a 95 powerstroke and it seems to have a lot more umph than my 97 does. He says there is no chip and both intakes and exhaust are the same. Mine has the hypertech program in it and just does not have the power he has. We have same gears, same tires, etc. He can bring the rpm's up against the turbo and just fry the tires. Mine won't do that and my turbo is not quite as loud(same stock turbo). Just wondering if you guys have any ideas. Thanks for your help.
the 97 were supposed to have a little more than the 95's.
check the turbo for dusting.
try resetting the chip or disconnecting the battery cables to reset the pcm.
He may have mods that he does not know about. Or could be sheeting you. What other mods do you have on your truck. More info the better the people here are able to help you.
The only other mods is the air cleaner setup. I eliminated the stock air cleaner setup with a k&n filter in it and made a homemade setup with a 12" long 8"round air cleaner with a 4" outlet on it and put some 4" pipe necked down to 31/2 to tie on to turbo. This is the same setup my buddy has on his. I checked the fuel pressure and got it at about 72 lbs. I am not real familiar with these diesels so I don't know how to check my map sensor hose(where it is) or the clogged CAT. Also how do I check the turbo for dusting? I am always willing to learn. I was just raised only around gas motors and need some help with these diesels. Thanks a lot guys.

to check the turbo for dusting (dust getting by the air filter and basically sandblasting the turbo fins) pull the black air hose loose where it connects to the turbo and look at the fins. if they are covered in dust or look sandblasted, thats not good.
the map sensor is on the firewall above the passengers side valve cover. theres a hose that runs from it to the intake.
take the intake off the compressor side of the turbo, and see if there is ant damage to the compressor wheel. if dirt/ dust gets sucked up in the it will scar or damage the wheel thus lowering boost and hp.
No easy way to check the CAT, just a big soot fiter anyway. Probably easiest way is to unbolt CAT from downpipe (flang) and move exhaust over a bit. Take it for a spin around the block .. you'll know really quick.
Different turbo a/r's from 95 to 97. I think the 97's have higher peak horsepower while 95's have better low end power and torque. Thats my opinion of corse.
I've driven a 95, I know exactally what you mean, they do seem to have more jam in stock form for some reason from a stop but as soon as you start getting into the top end like high speed driving and the engine running in the higher rpm range I (my 97) was pulling up on the 95 ps.
