The resistor called for is a 75k 1% tolerance resistor. I can get 2% tolerance resistors locally. Would that be adequate for this application? If not, does anyone happen to have a 1% resistor laying around? If you do, I can send you an stamped envelope and the cost of the part.
Thanks for resurrecting this thread. I'm subscribing for the info and pictures.

BTW, old threads are loaded with information. That's why they're still here and show up in searches. No need to apologize for bringing new life into old threads. I'm glad you did it to this one.

It was the first powerstroke though, I read it was a 100 though.. I could be wrong, it was raining here, so I didn't check it out.

Not sure about the E99 trucks, but they would either have a 110V or a 120V.
1994.5-1996 has 100V, 1997 has 110V, and SD have 120V. I'm just not sure about E99 since they are kind of a hybrid.

I'll let you know for sure what it has in it when I pull it out. That may be some time this week, if things go well.

This is why you buy a spare used IDM, and either do the mod on that one, or keep it as a backup. Cheap insurance, and not a bad thing to have as a spare in any event.

I recall someone from Swamps saying on one of the forums that the IDM-xxx number is NOT an indicator of the voltage. IIRC, both our '95s have IDM-100s, but the '95 EVTM clearly states that it's 110V DC.

So go by voltage, not model number right?

More magic and voodoo. Since I'm a Muggle, how do I verify voltage? Would that be listed in the Owner's Manual?

The resistor value for the 100 V and 110 V IDM is 75 Kilohms. The later 120 V IDM uses a 73.2 Kilohms resistor. These resistors have to be high quality. You will need a 1% tolerance 1/2 watt metal film resistor. You can find them at good electronics suppliers. Radio Shack will not have 1% resistors.
Here is a direct link to digikey for the 75K ohms.
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...PPC75.0KXCT-ND

Digikey part number:

Axial type:
75Kohm 75.0KXBK-ND For 100 and 110 model IDMs
73.2Kohm 73.2KXBK-nd For 120 model IDMs

SMT Type:
75Kohm 311-75.0KFRCT-ND For 100 and 110 model IDMs
73.2Kohm 311-73.2KFRCT-ND For 120 model IDMs

OTHER NOTE:
This procedure involves modifying sensitive electronic components - any number of which, if damaged will completely ruin the IDM which can cost anywhere from a couple hundred to over $400. During the process of doing this modification, electrostatic discharge safety procedures must be observed in order to protect static sensitive devices.

I hope this helps you

Thanks. I'm pretty comfortable working on electronics. That isn't to say I've *never* screwed anything up, but I should be able to get this done without any trouble when the time comes.

I wonder what idiot came up with that idea. Learn something everyday I guess.
