i have a 77 F250 Hiboy. thinkin about some fenderwell exit headers for my mild 400. how many of you guys are runnin these hedman headers? would i have to do any brake plumbin? whats your opinions on these?
I put some hedeman fenderwell's on my 79 F250 4x4 4spd 6" with 36"s Pretty easy overall, had to take off all break lines from proportional valve to master cyl. And drop back thru the middle of the tubes, no real major tube bending involved. Un-clamp the rigid brake line from the frame by the front shock mount is about it, best I can remember.
Get the thick header gaskets from Bronco Graveyard ,they are awesome compaired to others. IMO, and have had no re-torque problems, also easy to bolt up what ever exhaust you want with fender well exit.
I run straights to back of the cab, 5' stacks, and is LOUD. But can quick bolt on some cherry bombs. Also you will have to trim the inner metal fender wells a bit, and ck the clearence on the front cab mounts to the header tubes. I had a 1/8 in and with a little frame twist/motor flex, they would contact. So I trimmed the cab bracket a bit.
Oh yea gotta remove the dip stick tube and re-route it like the break lines. Hope this helps.
You will have to "cut/sawzall/air powered body saw" whatever you want to use to remove about 2" or 3" off of the bottom edge of both sides of your metal inner fender wells.
Make sure all those wires/hoses are clear, at first I just bent it outa the way, vice grips, away from the engine, toward the fenderwell. Then trimmed it up later, with about 1/2 clearence from the header tubes.
3 to 4 hours all by yourself, as long as you do not break off a old exhaust manifold bolt. Use PB blaster or some other good lube on those old manifold bolts, I mean a mess of lube!! LUBE LUBE LUBE I can not say that enough.
If you can let the manifold bolts soak for 3 or 4 days, spraying them every so often,5 to 6 times daily, that will help. I changed stock manifolds gaskets on my 77 4x4 400 Auto, broke 3, then broke the drill bit for the easy out, then broke the easy out.
Made for a LONG project, but got them retapped, and used a helicoil on one. Have heard different ideas about having the engine/manifolds cold or hot, either way, I still broke bolts. Cold is safer with all the lube sprayed all over the manifolds.
Will try to get a pic loaded tomorrow, to show exactily what I cut off the fender well. Fun project, real happy with outcome, just lube those old bolts like crazy. And use antisieze compound on the new bolts. Use a thread reamer to clean up the threads after all is removed.
Also try to not get any oil or lube on those new gaskets, could cause you to burn a hole in them. Having 2 people to do this makes it ALOT easyer. Use special lock washers from Fastenall company, that have little lock teeth all the way around. Made my torque check pass the first time around.
Hope this helps, and remember LUBE LUBE LUBE those old bolts.
Again not quite the right angle to show you the cab mount clearence, but gives you an idea. Hope this helps out, remember to lube those manifold bolts.
