I'm in the process lookin for a good set of headers for my 97 F250 with a 460. I have been looking at L&L and Hedman Hedders but depending on my return, Dougs, thorelys, and gibson could be in the range. Are Hedmans any good. So What is the bang per buck header? I'm leaning towards L&L but i havent heard about them on the forums. So please help me out
I have heard nothing but good about L&L headers and that is what i am going to use for my rebuild, but all the others are good quality one would think looking at their price. You get what you pay for in this world. I have heard about Hedmans having leaking issues
I installed a set of smog legal, ceramic coated Hedmans a year and a half ago. Remflex gaskets and double nutting the collectors have kept them sealed tight. I've put a wrench on them 3 times to make sure but never found them really loose, just a 1/4 turn or less is all they've taken. Mine were about $525 from Summit. That said, if you can stomach the price get Banks. I had a set on a 454 Surburban a few years ago and they are really nice.
I just installed Thorley's on my '91 F250...expensive; but, very pleased. Just make sure you get the right parts, connector pipe, etc.
A shop in San Diego that does this same setup for the city's old 460 trucks did the install. Several broken bolts were even difficult for them to remove. The bolts, I believe they were at the rear of the manifold, fractured inside bolt holes and had to be removed piece by piece by welding a rod to each part...be careful.
Good point, the manifold bolts are easy to break. I soaked mine in pb blaster 5 or 6 times over the two weeks before I did my install. Didn't break any.
Thorleys are a great step between hedmans and banks, probably the best quality vs dollars spent out there.
but if i recalled i think those thorelys will only work on autos. Maybe it was dougs headers but i do know one of these companys will not clear manuals
I have the complete Banks system, and with their 5/8 inch flanges you don't need gaskets between the head and flange, so after 2 years and 9,000 miles of pulling trailers I have not even looked at the flange bolts and there are no leaks. My vote Banks, but they are pricey.
Well i decided that im going to buy L&L. I found out just to do a single 3in all the way back is going to cost as much as the headers so, I'm going to buy the headers and let them set until i have a larger amount of funds for the rest. If I buy the headers and look at them everyday, it will give me the edge to save up for the rest of the exhaust
I would argue that L&L are just as good if not better then banks.. and half the price.... I too want headers for my F250 460 5 speed. Until today i was planning on L&L's
Just installed L&L's on my 93 F350 460 4x4. They are awesome headers and I highly recommend them from a quality and service perspective. I would deal directly with L&L (avoid Bronco Graveyard).
