Numbers Matching 300 Six
I was wondering if there is any sure way to tell if the 300 I6 in my truck is the original numbers matching engine? Usually there is a stamped number some where on the engine block that corresponds with the VIN number, but all I have found is the casting number (D5TE-6015-AA). Did they not do this with the 300, or am I missing something?

They wouldn't match to the VIN. Engines are made one place, final assembly somewhere else. The casting number can be date identified. Try doing some searching on that.

Yes, it's not a Chevy.
Ford did not do this.

If you run your VIN it will tell you what kind of engine came in that truck.

You cannot go by the casting number to date or ID anything.
Ford may have used the same casting number for years.
For example: D1VE-6015-AB: Bare block casting number for 1971/73 429's, 1971/79 460's.
Blocks have date codes on them, but that doesn't mean much of anything, either.
If the block was cast and dated in 1965, the same casting number and date could still have been used in 1968.

Not on
any Ford engine (transmission, rear end, whatever) there isn't.
There are
no VIN's on mechanical parts. Numbers matching is a
GM thing.
1975 casting year: D5TE-6015-AA: There is no real way to know what years this block was used on after 1975 for three reasons.
1) Block casting numbers cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers.
2) Ford updates 10's of 1000's of part numbers every year. E7TZ-6010-A (1987) is the Ford part number for a 300 block used 1973/87.
3) Ford casts additional parts for vehicles that were produced well before the casting number & date for use as service part replacements.
There were no 240 I-6's installed after 1974.
B is the VIN engine code (1965/80: 4th digit / 1981/96 8th digit) for 1965/96 300 I-6's.

Thanks NumberDummy, that's exactly the information I was searching for
. Cleared up a bunch of my questions all in one shot actually.
