DogginVolvo, after you have your complete cb system installed take it to a shop that installs them .You need to have them set the SWR with an SWR meter, this will insure you that you are transmitting at the highest signal strength for your system. In most cases the antenna will need to be shortened if it is a new unit that has not been shortened by a previous installer, although sometimes a longer antenna is necessary.Good Luck and catch ya on the backtrack!

I found a antenna at radio shack. not to big but it works. I installed it myself and am wandering if i could just go to the local car store to get it set for the highest frequency. Or is it possible for me to do it myself? And I ment I can hear truckers and other people with c.b. radios talking about recks and where cops are... not that i can hear cops... but thanks for the help...

DogginVolvo,
You need to check the SWR if you do not you stand a chance of damaging you CB radio. Find a good radio shop they will be able to help you out.
CH19 the the chanel you want to be on when wanting police information. It will take awhile to figure out what they are talking about... And when you are trying to get information try not to sound like a four wheeler (car)!! They usually will never talk to you.
Always know your yard stick (mile marker) so you can give the driver responding some information also. Your way of saying thanks.
Happy CB'ing

LAST EDITED ON 28-Oct-01 AT 00:37 AM (EST)[p]One of the best places to find a CB antenae is at a truck stop. If they don't have what you are looking for, most of the time, they can point you in the right direction for a CB shop. I have a Cobra 29 Classic ST/WX with a Wilson 1000 magnet mount antenae which works great. Also, check with your local law enforcement agency before putting a police scanner in your truck. Many states, like Kentucky, have laws against scanners in personal vehicles.

I bought my antennas at radio shack. The ones I bought were actually for a dual antenna setup. Came with 2 antennas and the mounting brackets. I mounted mine to the front of the bed down low just so the tops of the antennas got above the truck. Then bought the coax cable that come with one plug to the radio that splits to go to 2 separate antennas. I works pretty good. The SWR's run pretty low so I can get out on it pretty well. Just make sure you get enough coax cable.

a K-40 magnet mount is good but a Wilson magnet mount is better. As for what channel if you live in California it is channel 17 everywhere else is channel 19 as for reporting something some states the state troopers listen on channel 9 and some police stations listen on channel 9 but they very rarely talk unless it is a real emergency then they might talk to you to get more information from you
If your coax is to long don't wrap it in a ball spread it out you will get less interference
