I tried searching for this and couldn't pinpoint an answer. Thought I would start up a thread for the sake of others.
I have read on just about every thread of people pulling up a code or many codes that they are linking to what ever problem they seem to be experiencing with their truck.
Is there a way to pull these codes straight from the stock truck or do all of these people have tuners/monitors on hand to pull these codes from?
My only experience with codes is from my 01 4.6 Mustang and I could pull codes with my programmer but I considered it a luxury where as to here it seems everyone can pull a code.
You've got to 1) have a scanner capable of reading codes on the PSD (not the el cheapo version or the free scans from the parts stores), 2) have a programmer that can also read codes, 3) be lucky enough to have a fellow FTE member close by that can pull the codes for you, or 4) pay your local diesel shop to pull the codes for you.

Ok, so I am not crazy. What are the best choices for useful tools to pull these codes?
I am wanting the DP chip but that wouldn't help me pull codes would it?
No the DP won't help you pull codes, but you'll need a set of gauges for the DP. Terminator Engineering sells an Aeroforce scangauge that can show 2 readings at once while monitoring several others. It can also read codes, do an injector buzz test, and a cylinder contribution test.
Other options include buying an AE program that can read codes, monitor live data, and run tests, or looking for a deal on a used Edge, Superchips, or Diablo programmer and using them as a code reader.

Wow, thanks for the info Chris. I checked out the Terminator Engineering gauges and they seem like they could be well worth the penny for all the extra things they can do.
I also recall reading up that some people were getting after market gauges and tapping them in in places that the PCM wasn't. Like oil temp right before the oil cooler versus where the computer would be reading it at a location that isn't as hot.
Is this something to consider getting other gauges for as well?
