How often do you like to pull codes? I was told only to pull codes if engine light comes on. I have never pulled codes on my truck it still runs good. I have 140,000 on my 87 f150 4.9, should I change my o2 sensor? Its the only thing I haven't replace while doing my tune ups, it doesn't list a maintenance time to change it in my manual.
It might not hurt do do it on your truck, just to see. If your truck is like mine, the check engine light isn't wired from the factory, so you won't ever see it come on. You'll have to pull the codes using an analog volt meter or a small test light.
If i remember correctly my check engine lite ( yellow lite) come on at 120,000 miles. i was told it was a routine lite at the milage. It was to check all my emision parts. It went out 3,000 miles later. Has anyone heard of this before?
I think that is the EMISS light that is on a timer, but that's all I know of that would be timed. I had one on my truck, but I unplugged the timer module and used the wire at the back of the dash to hook up my check engine light.
My powersteering swtich was out and I could not figure out why my engine died when it was cold and I turn the steering wheel. The power steering switch advance the timing in order to handle the load of the pump.
I bought the $200 engine code checker from O'reilly. I use it on my 99 ford winstar also. Best investment in the world. It cost $200.00 down here to have you codes read at a deaerlship. Well that is what the dealership told me.
I always call to ask to see how much it cost to do a repair. When I am done with the repair, I go to my wife and say, see honey I saved XXX dollars. Then I take the saved money and spend it at Harrys Hotrod or Sears.

I like your logic GSchretter, I think like that too, If I can save a buck at the shop I go buy a new tool, are those code readers hard to operate?
i like to check for codes about 2 times a year. many times the MIL will not light up when certain codes are set. usually MIL will come on when the ECU loses connection with a device or there is failure of a device.
