226 Yes or No

Need some advice from the right people. I have the option of picking up a 1950 226 car engine, "running" and "complete" for short money. Would this even be worth the time? It will be used in a 35 Ford rat for daily driving w/ some highway speeds. I need a good engine that won't kill me w/ parts and upkeep or be unable to take normal driving. Also, if it's worth it, what tranny/ rear gear set would work? Thanks to any info I can get.

For modern highway work, as long as you have an OD the flat 6 will do you fine. Not a lot of hot-rodding opptions but there are some. It's a torque monster, gear it down and go!

I have the 226 in my F-2 and it's one tough engine, might not as easy to get parts for but it'll take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. I think it's a lot better engine than the flat V8, just not as sexy.

I love the 226 engines. I put one in the 51 F6 tow truck I built. Egge has parts. I got a new oil pump from them. I rebuilt the whole engine and had no problem getting parts.

Go for 226

Thanks for the info, especially about Egge. Saturday looks like a good day to get it, now for the trans. Can a T-5 from an S-10 be fitted to it with an available adapter? I only ask because there's so many available in the Junkyards (hmm, lots of Chevys in the junkyards not so many Fords). Thanks again.

You can mount a T-5 behind a 226, in fact one of our members has a gallery with the procedure he used:

I've been looking around trying to find something like this done with an automatic transmission. A month or more back I recieved some information from another member on where to get the stuff i need to make a push button gear selection work, but have not found an "easy to install" 5 speed transmission yet. Any suggestions?

Junkman I might be wrong but I believe the car 226 is a little different than a truck 226. Something like oil pan and pickup and water pump. Anybody confirm or correct?

from what little i know Frank you are correct. The water pump is very different but LMC sells the car pump (even though they list it as for a truck), finding a truck pump is near impossible but Napa will send off to be rebuilt for <$40. The carbs are different as identified here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-question.html

I have a 226 in my F-3.
Parts like the water pump are "precious & few".
Just getting the original radiator recored was close to $300.
If I wasn't trying to keep this original, I'd have dropped a late model chevy 6.0 and automatic transmission in it by now.
Good luck!

Free trans

Well, I got the 226 on Saturday. I'm saving to get that adapter mentioned above, but does anyone know if a T-4 can handle the strain instead of a T-5. Reason: T-4 is free, T-5 isn't.
