Under the dash at the bottom end of the shifter rod is a triangle shaped piece of metal that is held on by 2 torx bolts. I think they are a #25 torx size. It's up around the top of the column and is a bit hard to see but you can get to it fairly easily. Tighten those 2 bolts and the shifter will tighten right up for you.

There's nothing wrong or harmful about changing the tranny fluid. I would just make sure it is done a week before you leave so that you have time to make sure there are no problems and that the fluid level is where its supposed to be.

Alloro, I did try and do this back in February, but wasn't able to find the torx bolts.. it's bugging me again lately.

Do I have to take the steering column apart at all or am I just not looking in the right place?

No disassembly required. Here's a couple of pictures showing the plate and it's two torx bolts. I took these pictures laying on the driver's floor mat and looking up under the dash. Just to give you and idea of the angle of the camera, it was pointing from the floor heat ducts towards the drivers shoulder strap mount.

I too have that loose shifter. I also thought it was loose from inside the steering column so after taking it apart a few months ago, I found that there was nothing to tighten where the shifter connects into the column. Based on those photos Alloro provided, I will look at it again tonight.

The bolts under the dash were pretty tight. Still managed to tighten them a little more, but the shifter is still loose as can be.. based on lzrj's post.. I guess i'll leave it at that.

Couldn't hurt to check, it only takes a couple of minutes.
