Mine whines all the time. It appears the schleps at the Pennzoil station the previous owner brought it to for maintenance, put power steering fluid in there. I'm going to go the synthetic ATF route like everyone suggests. I just need to find the time to do it.

How bad is it that I put power steering fluid in the pump!?!?! Is there a good way to evacuate it and get some synthetic thrown in to replace it?

Also... Are there any threads on replacing the power steering pump? I'm pretty sure that mines burnt. I have been searching and can't find anything!!

I had a similar issue with mine when ps fluid was put in mine. I removed the return line to the pump (low pressure line) and routed it to a gal container. Then I started the engine had my wife turn the steering wheel small amounts and pump the brakes while I poured Mercon into the pump. I added about 3 qts while pumping out. This did a pretty good job of purging the system. Mine quit winning after about 2 days of driving. I would highly recommend changing out power steering fluid and put in the Ford recommend fluid. This is a vane pump that has a lot of physical contact inside the pump. Incorrect fluid can lead to pump failure which will give you NO brakes or Steering assist if you drive a diesel.

If this doesn't work and you need to replace it, here's a write up on it https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...ring-pump.html
