Over the last 2 days my truck has a weird starting problem. I turn the key on and hear the fuel pump. I believe I hear the glow plugs since I let them go for about 2 minutes and the sound stops. The truck sounds like normal but it just won't start. After the third try it starts right up. Right now its 39 degrees out. After it starts it will start every time on the first try till the next morning. Any ideas?????? Batteries both at 12.3 volts and 10.7 under start. Altenator just replaced last night (bad diode). Could this be a dreaded glow plug relay and if so how would they still be turning on with the key on. Thanks
What I think you are hearing with the key on is the vacuum pump. You can't hear the GPs when they are on. You might check the GPR to see if it is working.
I agree you are hearing the vacuum pump. I can hear my stancor relay shut off and then my led goes out. I bet it is your GPR, if it is shot switch the wires to the AIH relay and use that till you can get the stancor.
Why do you think the GPR is dreaded? Test it with a volt meter right when the key is first turned on in the morning, hold a screwdriver across the 2 big posts for 30 seconds before you try to start, or just swap it with the other relay (AIH) that's right in front of it if you don't want to replace it right now.
That's the GPR. It's about as hard to change as the alternator you just did, but costs a lot less.
