i got an 83 6.9 and i am pretty sure the glow plugs are not working as there are wires everywhere and i don't hear any clicking or anything when the key turns on. it was hard to start at first without ether but there was a fuel leak. i fixed it and now it still does it. it cranks just fine after the first crank. does this sound like a glow plug problem.
Check all your wiring on the pax fender, look for a grey connector with yellow wires, known problem. Then check the large multi wire connector on the same fender for burned wires another bad boy. The older GP systems are known to burn up GPs by sticking on. Many members have installed a push button system and 5 second timing of GP operation. You may find info here............http://www.members.shaw.ca/k2pilot/
the person before me has wires cut and laying everywhere. i don't see that connector. there is a wire cut on the small terminal on the GP solinoid closest to the fender. what is this. does it go to the voltage reg. you think my first starting problem is because of the glow plugs
The wire closest to the fender should be black and go to ground.
The wire closest to the engine should be purple and go to the controller.
The wire closest to the battery should be red and go to the battery positive terminal.
The wires closest to the cab should be orange and white stripe plus a black with pink stripe, they go to the glow plugs and wait to start light.
ok i found that the glow plug system works when hotwiring it. just now have to see if this will make it start on the first crank without ether. the block heater is working and i had it plugged up for a couple hours after driving it and i tried to crank it and it wouldn't crank up. and this was still hot after driving and having the block heater plugged in. it has got to be a fuel air seapage problem. what do you all think. maybe injectors or pump is going. can somebody help me here. it runs very strong. no smoke out of the ordinary from the exhaust. i don't get it. i replaced 2 bad hoses on the truck. do i have a piece of junk or is this easily fixxed with a part. i don't think the rings are bad or sticking.
Look at the injectors and see if the return lines are painted gray. If they are - then replace the rubber lines as they are leaking air in. Especially if they are cracked (from age).
can they leak air in and not leak fuel out
but yes most of the hoses are cracked. i was unsure if that would cause it since it was not leaking fuel out.
Yes it will leak air in but no fuel out as the fuel is thicker than air (molecules). We have seen this quite often on this forum and I have personally done this on my 93.
Also while your looking. Check under the truck and follow the fuel lines from the tank to the engine. If they are very rusty - replace with a fuel line hose to bypass the bad spot. I had to do this last year on my 93. found a rusty spot under a plastic clip. Again didn't leak fuel out but let air in. It was a hard starter until I figured it out. Now starts right up.
my friend thought the rings could be sticking now since the people were using ether on it to crank. but it doesn't smoke and it runs great. then he said yeah it must be a fuel problem.
When you do the fuel return lines, get a set of O rings for under the platic tees.
If you don't replace them when you do the fuel lines, they will be leaking the next day and you will still have the same problem.
Do you still have the return line on the fuel filter that runs down to the number 1 injector?
If you do this also might be your problem, cut the line and install a bolt in each end.
i also have a set of old mismatched batteries. one is going bad i think because i have to jump it off and it takes a while to get enough juice to spin it a few seconds. this could be a part of my problem but not totally as it cranks right up after the first start. lets say if you crank it with ether and kill it right away, it starts up really fast within a few minutes. anything more it will be hard to start. this really sounds like a fuel problem like we are discussing.
