Question 302 oil pan clearance problem

I went to put the engine onto the frame of my truck tonight. The oil pan has the large part toward the front of the engine. The problem is that when I go to lower it, the pan is too big and will end up sitting on the mustang II crossmember. I believe if it were facing the other way, it would fit just fine. Can you take the pan off and turn the sump around to the other side so that you can put the pan on the other way (large portion to the rear?

I still need to call the company that made the engine for me because it'll probably void my warranty if I do that on my own, but I was just curious as to how I will get that engine into my truck.

You`ll need to change the pan and oil pump pick-up tube for a rear sump.

Maybe you'll need the Mustang II oil pan?

I did a search for Mustang II oil pan on Jegs, and most of them (even though they don't specifically say "Mustang II), were ones that had a front and rear low spot (so I'm guessing a dual sump), where the crossmember would fit in the space between the two lowpoints. I don't need that. I would run into the same problem I have now. The very front of the oil pan is where the clearance problem is.

393STROKER is right. I just need to change the pan and sump to a rear one. I just didn't know if it was possible to just turn it around, or if I needed to get new sump and pan, or if i was screwed. I'm going to call the company tomorrow and see if they'll just swap them out for me.

Thanks for the help!!!

Mustang II oil pans are unique and I think are only available from those cars and from Ford before they were obsolete.

I don't recall the details but they are not dual sump. I'm pretty certain that oil pans cannot be turned end for end and reinstalled.

What engine?

If 302/5.0, any 85-up 5.0 mustang pan & pickup (short sump front, deep sump rear) should work. It is not necessary to get a specific Mustang II pan. Ford Racing makes kits based on stock parts for their crate engines.

Most aftermarket companies make several rear sump/pickup pans for ford engines that get swapped into vehicles with rack&pinion steering. 302s, 351s & 460s. Haven't see ones for FEs, but I'm sure someone makes them. Just do some searches on Canton, Moroso, etc sites.

On edit, saw the title bar (302)

Welcome to the darkside gentlemen, If you all did your homework you wouldnt have this issue. How did you mock up your engine and trans was the oil pan on the engine?, when you do these mods you have to have all your bases covered. You may have to change your engine mounts to make it work. There is plenty of room to move your engine in the engine bay. was the cab on the chassis when you did your mock up? There are plenty of these set-ups on the road. This is just my $.02 worth good luck!

As original, there is only one Mustang II 302 oil pan, this one...

D5ZZ6675A

Fits: 1975/78 Mustang II 302 only / Obsolete / No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

1974 Mustang II's were not available with the 302, only the 2.3L 4 cylinder, and the 2.8L V6 were available.

I believe I read in another of the OP's threads that his 302 engine is from a 1969.

He didn't mention whether it came from a car, Bronco, Econoline or F100.
