I bought my '01 Ex last February. It has the V10 and I have been very happy. The dealer where I bought my Ex has an '04 Ex with the 6.0 Liter PSD. It has about 55k miles and is a Limited. Their asking price is $23,995. I really like the looks of this truck and providing that the Oasis and Carfax reports come out clean, can people tell me if this is a good deal? Do I have some negotiating room on the price? What kind of MPG's could I expect with this, both on the highway and pulling a 7000lbs TT? Any info would be greatly appreciated!
I picked up my 04 Ex with a PSD for 12k with 170k on the clock. I've done 10k miles in 3 months in it, and it runs like a dream. Miles don't scare me, it's how well it was taken care of prior. My truck was a corporate vehicle, single owner, prior to my purchase. With a 6k load on the highway I can typically squeese 14mpg at 55-60mph. Increase to 65-70mph and you are at 12mpg. It gets much worse much faster as your speed increases.
Seems about the average price from a dealer.... and if you want the 6liter then the 05 is the probably the best choice. try checking autotrader or craigshelper.com and u can search any areas you want easily
My guess is the OP is not mechanically inclined and has all work done by a shop thus high mileage scares him/or her.... thus leaving the higher mileage bargins for folks like me...
umm how long would it take you to recoup the additional $$$ of better mpg compared to the higher payment or purchase price? a few MPG is not gonna save you anything by the looks of it... plus u will have all the cold weather issues associated with Diesel engines.... buying 15 quarts of oil each oil change etc... just some food for thought
c'mon - fellow V-10 owners - stop knocking the guys who choose diesel. If they have the money, and dont like to be stuck like we V-10 owners when towing (limping in the right hand lane up those long upgrades ) ...let the diesel guys alone !
Around central N.C. that would be a deal. Even when fuel prices went through the roof Excursions around here were a highly sought item for those who wanted a tow vehicle. I know of two dealers who have waiting list for the V10 and the diesels only sit on the lot for a week or less. The prices for the V10 and the 6.0 are about the same.
I bought mine from a good friend a year ago who didn't really have a need for one. I knew the history of the X, and how it was taken care of. While searching for one the dealers wouldn't haggle much at all because they knew someone would come by and buy it. If the X was black, they wouldn't haggle at all. Must be plenty of people around here with plenty of money, and they pay the premium to get what they want.
Just remember it isn't a deal if you purchase it for a killer price, only to have to spend a few thousand on it for repairs.
I don't see EVER recouping what you paid for your Ex after the dealer rapes you on trade value and the asking price on that '04 seems very high to me given the way these things prices have tanked recently...
If it were me...I couldn't justify the change...especially on a 7000# TT...my 9000# TT does not keep me in ANY right hand lanes up ANY grade I've tackled...including Vail and Loveland passes on I-70 in the Rockies (10,600' and 11,200')...
$/mile wise the difference between V10 and PSD is about a wash these days and that could and does change daily as the fuel prices fluctuate...but for what you are going to lose on the 'trade'...you can buy a lot of 87 octane...just my $0.02.
If you feel you need more power...regear to 4.30's if you have 3.73's and save a whole BUNCH of $$$!!!
$23k, absolute rip baby! I wouldn't give more than $17k for that Excursion!! Don't even pay retail price for an SUV that's 5 years old!! Just my .02 cents........Shoot I had my 04 6.0 Ex for sale and would have taken $15k had someone offered it to me a few months ago!!!
actually, for an 05 PSD EX> thats a decent price. you wont see an 05 for 17,500 in this area with a6.0 PSD. thats about what you mite get at trade in. Check one of this sites advertisers (lenz truck) they have an 05 for 24,000. and an 04 for 22,000. they offered me 20,000 for mine over the phone. EVS in lomira wi. is asking 25,000 to 29,000 for 6.0
Ex,s. but they are low milage. i wouldnt even consider one with over 100,000 miles.
Diesel prices are around $2.23 per gal. around here. Truck prices are on the rise and vehicles are selling. there are more excursions on the road in my area than last year. a good clean diesel with less than 100,000 miles are sought after.
I have a ’00 V10 and was thinking about getting a diesel as well, just for the fuel diversity (who knows what may happen, and what fuel will be available?) but have heard nothing but bad things about the 6.0. You can still find up to 2003 7.3 (mixed year for the 7.3/6.0) with 150k mile or so for the 10 to 12 k range, in pretty good shape. I love my V10, and except for plug cost, the maintenance is no more than any other gas engine. Mileage for my 4” lifted 4x4 with 315s averages about 10.5 combined and about 14.5 highway.
One can do the math with the assumptions of about 15 combined and 20 highway for the diesel, and varied gas/diesel prices to see what the payback time is. When I bought mine, it would be about 6.5 years verses a diesel. That doesn’t include the maintenance differences. The gas is quieter as well.
Still thinking about having a diesel as another option though.
