My stroker is a weekend warrior until the temps get about freezing. I noticed yesterday after I locked in my hubs to do a litle dog searching I could hear a "tinging" noise going down the highway or gravel. The noise got worse as I increased speed. I unlocked the hubs and the noise went away.
The noise dosen't sound that bad, but sounds like something could be brewing up. This is the first time I've noticed it and my hubs have usually be locked in since December.
Any ideas where/why/how I'm getting this noise?
The 4x4 worked perfect if that makes anything easier..
It could easily be one of the front u-joints. I had it removed when I did my turbo project and its possible I did not get it torqued down correctly.
The one thing that worries me is that I haven't checked the front diff fluid in forever. However, I do limited driving with the hubs locked in. I'm one of those guys that have 4x4 but never want to use it...
when my axle pivot bushings wore out the u joint was hitting the bracket for the lift and it made a similar noise. take a look at that, cant remember if you have a lift farm69.
ha! you should here the noises mine makes, i cant even describe them, you just have to ride and hear it. as soon as you hear it you will want out of the truck, i have no clue what it is, its only when the axle is locked in and i have replaced the front axle, hub to hub, brakcets and all, both driveshaft u-joints and the t-case with no change...... i'm stumped. my opnly hope is to install a 350 driveshaft and hope its the shaft ninding with the lift
I'm not running a lift, but I recently put another leaf lifting the front a little bit. I'll start with the u-joints and go from there. I doubt it's the T-case or the differential/hubs.
I only lock it in only when I have too. I'm one of those guys that are "wish I would have locked it in earlier" type.
What are some possible ideas that would make this type of noise?
your tinging noise is probably a wore out u-joint or sometihng "run of the mill" my noise is the "GOD I AM GOING TO EXPLODE AND YOU CANT STOP ME" noise, but i cant figure it out.....
one other thing to look at is your locking hubs. the bearing in there gets worn and causes the short shaft to wobble some. when that happens the locking cam flexes while engaged and causes noise. end result is a grenaded locking hub. worth a look if you dont find a bad u joint.
If the noise is a sign of metal on metal. If you've got a joint, or hub going bad, you should be able to feel it. Take a spin in 4WD. then climb under it a lightly touch the joints, hubs, and diff. If it's failing, and that's what you are hearing, you should be able to feel that heat.
Metal to metal will produce heat. Check the u-joints, the hubs, and the diff.
If you still can't find it. Drop the front driveshaft and run with the hubs locked. If the noise is still there it's definitely in the front axle area. If it quits, it's the driveline/t-case area.
