I have a 2002 Excursion with a 7.3 and have recently experienced some slippage in the transmission (well my wife has for about the last 6 mornings and now has told me about it...). It has 75K on it and the fluid was recently changed, not flushed, with the Mercon V fluid. We tow a 10,000 lb trailer about 2,000 miles per year and my wife uses it in town for another 8,000 per year.
For the past few mornings, when the vehicle is cold (about 40F) and placed in drive it slowly moves. When the vehicle is warmed for 2-3 minutes it is not noticable. Today, I took it out (after my wife drove it 4 miles to the store) and could power jack it in first gear and the Fluid level is good. Other than having my wife warm it up in the morning, my questions are:
1) Have any of you experienced this before?
2) Could this be from Mixing Mercon V with Mercon? This is what the Ford dealership recommended...
3) Should any codes trip?
4) Should I be concerned towing?
I am planning on towing in 2 weeks and need to get this taken care of before I am stuck on the side of the road. Thanks in advance for the help.
here at work we have e350s and e450s, it seems that if the ambulances are not "plugged in" before we leave the station that they would not fall out of a tree but once the get warmed up they run just fine.
Mine is throwing a code and yet the slipping is unnoticable, so I think if there was a problem, it would throw a code.
A few questions:
1. Is it actually slipping (RPMs going up between shifts) or just a delay from the time you put it in gear until the truck moves?
2. Was the cooler disconnected from the transmission and the cooler backflushed to remove sediment?
3. Before the fluid was changed, was there any slippage?
Man...you do not want to mix the two MERCON fluids! You really need to completely drain the transmission and torque converter and put in either MERCON or MERCON V.
Problem is the 02's did away with the TC drain plug so you're left with doing a flush. Not a big deal just go to a reputable shop.
I let it sit until this morning, started it and there was no noticable slipage. It did lag a little when I floored it, it felt like it lagged untill the turbo spooled. One additional note is the vehicle sat for almost 2 days before my wife drove it and there was slipage.
When i did the fluid, all I did was drain the pan and change the filter. It has not tripped a code either.
So once again. Man...you do not want to mix the two MERCON fluids! You really need to completely drain the transmission and torque converter and put in either MERCON or MERCON V.
