I know I'm due for a fuel filter change. But how loud is the HFCM suppose to be? I'm just concerned its whinning to loud.
And what are the various noises that I hear too when the key is turned. I hear a hum for a few seconds and it goes off. The HFCM lasts a lot longer and that goes off. There is also something on the passenger side motor that hums and goes off too.
First hum you hear are the injectors cycling (some call it injector buzz). Second hum you hear is the vacuum pump. Third hum you hear is the HFCM/pump.
I can't answer your basic question about how loud is too loud for the HFCM/pump whine. Mine varies but it's always audible. I would be more concerned if I didn't hear it whine.
check the condition of the filters first...if they're dirty it may make the pump labor a little more...a fuel pressure gauge is what you really need to see if it's keeping up.. if you end up replacing the pump on your dime, it should come with a new filter..you should buy a new set of filters when you change the pump and you'll have an extra for the HFCM when you're done..
if its humming while its running then your filter is probably clogged, mine was doing it last week, turned out to be gelled up, I changed both filters and all is well now. Dont run it long if its humming you could do damage to your injectors!
my vacuum pump runs from 15 to 90 sec. and the dealer said not to worry about it. there are times that i start the eng. while the pump is still running.
I pulled out the primary filter. It looked dirty and it had a slight glaze on the microscreen on the filter. I flushed the filter out with 911 and alcohol from the inside of the filter.
The weather is warm right now. But the truck has power to accelerate. And the fuel pump/heater no longer loud as it was before. I can hear the engine and nothing more.
I will be changing the fuel filter this week. I'm suprised how dirty diesel is while it's suppose to be clean. I get my fuel from diesel pumps with heavy usage. The secondary filter was dark in color too. Just a warning to others to change your filters no matter where you buy your fuel.
i dont think i'd ever wash a filter for re-use. even if you take it out to inspect it i wouldn't try to wash it, just give it a look and put 'er back in. the filter media is white so when you put any liquid in it it'll look brown, especially diesel fuel.
