What is the this in inside Hfcm ? Fell off and truck losing power?

Was changing fuel filter on my f250 6.0l and saw inside the Hfcm a small round button like switch or trigger type valve in the back of the Hfcm. Does anyone know what this is and does, I reached inside to wipe out the Hfcm and it fell off. Now my truck seems like it running out of fuel at times not all of the time. Any help will be greatful.

The piece was inside right beside fuel pump and filter,on back side . Not the water drain side but if you reach in straight back not on side.

The only thing on the filter side is the check valve on the port that it pulls the fuel from the tank, the check valve is attached to a piece of spring steel, here is a photo from my old HFCM, Name: WP_000000.jpg

This is looking inside the HFCM where the primary filter goes, its located on the frame rail.

Duh? He was asking about something in the HFCM and I wanted to make sure you were on the same page so you didn't think you had something missing. If the standpipe in the secondary filter housing is missing or broken I would get it replaced so you are not getting unfiltered fuel to your injectors.

That's what it is the check valve, what exactly does it do and what happens when it is missing?
