hey guys looks like you guys know your **** on here so here i go. I am new to the diesel world however not the super duty world. I recently bought a 2002 F-350 7.3L. there is oil sitting on top of my motor and there is oil leaking down the back of the motor. after looking through this site there is a lot more things to a diesel motor than my tritons so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Check out Guzzle's Site for lots of great info about those two things (and plenty of others). Guzzle also has a side business selling replacement O-rings and both his product & service are EXCELLENT. I've bought from him twice now and very highly recommend him.
Also check your boots connecting the intake, intercooler, etc. to see if there are any leaks there.
The O-rings on the High Pressure Oil Pump go bad. Mine kind of blew out on me in front of the house and I was in hurry to get it back so I towed it in to the local 7.3 specialist and that's what it was. This cost me about $200 + but I am sure there are many motorheads on this site to line you out on the DIY. The people on this site are really helpful.
Welcome to FTE. You will need a flash light, look in the valley to see if you can find the leak. If you can't find it, take some simple green and spray all over the engine, let it sit, then wash it off with a water hose. Then you should be able to find the leak. At least try to see if the leak is in the back or front. Once you find the leak, we can help you fix it.
Stick around, this place has great people and info.
If it's not real bad, could just be the orange CAC tubes leaking the nasty CCV junk out. Mine was pretty oily there, and down the back of the block. Another common place is the EBPV arm -- mine was also leaking there just a wee bit. Turbo/pedestal O-rings, HPOP, HP oil plugs, etc.... All sources of oil leaks.
i will try and find the leak tommarow if i can! We have been getting hammered with snow! I figured out HPOP high pressure oil pump but what is a CAC, CCV, EBPV THANKS TOO!
Fuel bowl is just under the engine dressing cover (it's the big round black thing). If you climb up on your bumper (or tow hooks) with a flashlight and look behind the bowl you'll see a yellow handle. This is the drain valve (you should drain the bowl once a month to get the junk out of there). You might want to hook up a hose otherwise it will drain down the side of your block. There are 4 #20 torx tip screws that hold that valve assembly to the bowl along with 2 o-rings inside. These o-rings have a tendency to leak over time since these engines were not originally designed for the ULSD out today. Find a gasket supplier or marine store and buy 2 Viton o-rings (size -202) for about 50 cents and put them in there to fix the fuel leak (if that's what it is). Save the $15 you'd spend on line for the rings, get them from a local supplier. If not, support guzzle's o-ring website at Replacement O-rings for Diesel Engines and get them there.
If it's an oil leak don't forget to check the turbo pedestal o-rings and the ICP sensor too...
jusy wondering why the fuel bowl drain valve will leak oil? and where is it located?
If the engine is dirty, and the fuel runs down the valley and out the back, it picks up the dirty stuff and turns black and looks like oil. Many have made that mistake. Don't worry, you will pick up on all the words soon, and working on the 7.3 is not as bad as it looks.
ok guys i didn't get a chance to check it out today cause of snow but i noticed i smell oil burning when going up a hill. i'm guessing because the motor is running hard then its leaking more. is it possible to better pin point the problem with this info?
