its basically like the SES light for the transmission.... means a DTC for the tranny has occured... it also often means the beginning of the end for your tranny.....
(Overdrive) can be deactivated
by pressing the transmission control
switch on the end of the gearshift
lever.
This transmission control indicator
light (TCIL) will illuminate on the
end of the gearshift.
Note: If the Overdrive OFF light
flashes steadily at any time, have
the system serviced immediately
This happens occasionally on mine as well. Since i got the Ex a month ago have seen the check engine light and/or the ABS light.
We DL'd the computer and got a speed sensor code which makes sense and is reported to be whats kicking the ABS light as well.
I would venture to say this "can" be as minor as just this sensor or wiring to that sensor causing problems to systems further down the line when they do not know how fast the vehicle is travelling.
Usually when I get this flashing light my speedometer also doesnt work. However usually it comes back on shortly thereafter which leads me to believe I have a loose/broken wire somewhere
In past experience a flashing OD light means....get the wallet because a rebuild is near. Scan for DTCs to point in the right direction and don't drive the truck.
I was leaving the house this am and the O/D light on the shifter was blinking. Any ideas guys? Its a 2000 7.3 BTW.
I have a '98 Expedition also, it wasn't cutting the towing so we got the Excursion 7.3 psd.
Anyhoo.. when we were towing over the continental divide coming back from Utah, my OD light started flashing, I was driving fast and pushing the tranny very hard. I immediately took it to the dealer and had the tranny fluid changed. It has never come on again.
Guys, Go check this out/do a search for "OD Light" on the '99-'03 PSD forum....the cause of the light flashing is most likely a sensor on top of the rear end that is less than $15.00 and available at Ford or NAPA, mine has done this and changing the sensor and cleaning the connections has fixed it so far.

Perhaps so but without him drawing the codes, how are we to know?
My 2000 x did all the above, it's a very, very simple fix. On top of the rear pumpkin is a magnetic sensor, which like SUPERCAB said, cost is very minimal and takes all of 5 min to change. I replaced mine in 2005 and no problems since. Rely on getting codes all you want or take the word from others who have gone through the same thing your going through now, keep it simple and don't reinvent the wheel.
