I forgot in my earlier post that I also have a play in the steering when driving down the road. It isn't terrible, but it is enough that you have to pay attn to. A few of my Ford buddies told me to tighten the worm gear or the other adjuster on the gear box. Are the correct? How do I go about adjusting the worm gear? I don't want to replace the steering box right now. Thanks again.
You need to have someone turning the steering wheel back and forth across the center and get under and look at the steering and suspension parts, including the steering shaft and connections, for play.
Is it lifted or stock height?
There are like 4 different places on the steering shaft itself where play can develop (rag joint, slip joint, U-joint, and the tilt assembly), make sure all of these are good before you mess with the gear mesh load in the box as it's a great way to kill the gear box and in some instances yourself.
I would take it to one of those shops and get the free quote on the repair a friend of mine gets his wife to take his in and then she says she has to let hubbie decide
Its an 85 4x4. I may have found the prob. Looks like when they put the tie rod ends on, the right one wasn't tightened all the way and now it is too loose to tighten up. Hopefully a new end will be tight and not have to replace the spindle arm (not sure what its called)
