Worm gear removal

I'm going to be replacing my chewed up worm gear in the steering box on my '60 f-100 as soon as the parts arrive. I understand this is pressed on and logic tells me that it is pressed on from the top down, that is over the steering wheel splines down to the end of the shaft.

Is this correct? Does anyone have experience with this? What is the easiest way to get this accomplished?

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK the steering column shaft and gear are one piece. There are people on here that have rebuilt their boxes before, but they may just not have seen this thread yet. When the parts arrive you'll be better able to see what needs to be done. I'm sure tho it would not have been pressed on down the entire length of the shaft.
The Mid Fifty catalog shows it all one piece.

You can purchase the shaft with worm gear or just the worm gear alone. I just want to be sure when I get it pressed off that I'm going in the right direction!
Thanks for your input, though!

Re. Worm Gear

There is a method for doing this, the shaft should be cooled down you can do this by putting it in dry ice, for about 1/2 hour.
Place the worm in the oven at moderate heat till good and warm. This is a one shot deal usually, take care in placeing the worm back onto the shaft and get it right the first time, you might not get a second chance.
Use maybe a pair of vise grips so as not to pass the area as to where the worm is supposed to seat.
This is called sweating it in place, once the two metals contract you have a solid fit.
You can use a torch but be carefull not to remove the tempering in the metal, or your right back where you started.
Good luck, and maybe check with another person here on the forum as for a second opinion, good luck.
