My pyro gauge started bouncing all over the place and cutting out ! Do the probes go bad at all... or do you think I've got a loose connection some where ??? I wiggled the wire and it didn't make the needle bounce... right now its not working at all ! it only come on some times...
Although I am not 100% sure I would think that they can go bad over time. Double check the connections at the probe and at the guage for starters. Then order a new probe if needed.
Was just out picking up some parts and this one is weird ! It reads the EGT's when its under 16-1700 RPM.. After that it cuts out and goes to zero ! Why would it work when the RPM's are down ????? Must be a bad connection eh ??
It's just a thermocouple, so you should be able to Ohm it out at the connector. Open is bad... Hard to say about the RPMs, the failure could be sensitive to vibration...?

I have seen some thermocouples fail at certain temp. Don't know why but they do from time to time.

How would I Ohm that out ??? Between where & where ?? would you ohm out the sending wire and ground ???? That would tell you if it was totally shorted out I guess...
The thermocouple itself is a two wire device. I'm guessing you only have two wires running out to the probe. Isolate them at the connection to the guage and probe them there. Like Jim said, T/Cs will sometimes fail at certain temperatures, not exaclty sure why myself, but I suspect quiality of the welded T/C bid itself....? You you indicated an RPM dependance thought, so it's hard to say. If it fails reliably above 1700 RPM make sure your probe it in that condition.
At a certain RPM your EGT's are close to a certain temp....for the most part. The TC may be failing not in correspondence with the RPM's but with the temp that is associated with it.

I would agree with you there Jim.... I think you're right... It seems to go out some where around the 400 mark ! I'll get a new probe and install it tomorw hopefully ! Thats probably whats wrong ! I'll let you guys know how it turns out !

Good luck. I'll be looking forward to your results.

Jim... Finally found some time today to change the oil and change the pyro gauge probe... The probe was the problem.. pyro gauge is back up and working good as new !!! Sorry for the huge delay in getting this issue looked at !
