EV2 Pyro Question..

Hey all,I won a set of EV2s this year at RRE(thanks Clay!!). I"m currently running Autometer Ultralite series guages(boost, pyro, and trans temp. The probe for my current pyro is the clamp style and I have it drilled into the up pipe. The probe with the EV2s is the type that you drill and tap and tighten the bolt/probe to center the chamber in the manifold.
My question is can I use the same probe from my Autometer pyro for the EV2? Will the wires from the probe connect to the EV2 and be accurite if they will connect? I haven't had time to look at it so if its obvious either way..sorry.... Thanks..Phil

1. Your probe is in the wrong spot.
2. You need to move the probe anyway and you want to get sell your Autometer, so you might as well pull it and start over with the new.

Thanks Rich. Whats wrong with having the probe in the uppipe? I've read that a lot of people have them that way, hence the clamp style probe I think it was designed for the uppipe. .thoughts??

They put it there because it's an easy install. An easy install doesn't hold any real benefit after the install is done. What you really want is true EGTs at the manifold. The EV2 EGT gauge I have shows color coding for the temperatures you need to focus on, plus an alarm at 1250 degrees F - which serves zero purpose on the up-pipe. If you know what the temperature drop will be for the location of the sensor, you can do the constant math to work out what's really happening at the manifold as you drive. Not my first choice.

would there be that much difference between the uppipe and the manifold??? i could see if he has it in the downpipe it would be a concern, but the uppipe is still pre turbo so what would be the issue?

If you're on the up-pipe, you've crossed past a connector. Your EGT gauge is as much about heat soak as it is about gas temperatures, and you read heat soak on the manifold. If this was kitchen oven temperatures, I'd agree with you. At 1250 degrees F, the dynamics at play get a little different. Anybody who has used a cutting torch knows a few inches away from cut makes a big difference in temperature. Think of it this way, the pipe is surrounded by ambient temperature - hundreds of degrees cooler than the exhaust. That temperature difference would be akin to wrapping a home heating air duct with ice bags. The pipe and the air is gunna cool off right-quick

Manifold it is! Tugly, thank you for the explanation, now its very clear why it should be put it on the manifold.
