That's where mine is dave. I let it cool down like that. I've got it to 1300 twice but it wasnt there more then a sec or two. I backed down. I've ran it hard a couple of time recently. I took the piece off the intake from the air box to the hood. I've noticed under a heavy load on the engine its around 100 degrees cooler. Cruising at 60 its the same.
I'm working on a cold air intake to my driver side. That should lower the temp a little more.
what im trying to do is get the most performance/power out of the stock motor, as i cannot afford to add a turbo at this time.
So the big question is this, assuming it has never been turned up, how far is it dafe to turn the screw before i am gonna have to constantly monitor the EGT with a pyrometer?
chubyboy,
I missed welcoming you to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
The straight answer there can be none.
It really surprises some people how hot the engine can get at stock fuel settings.
Heavy right foot, and lower RPM's really bring the heat up.
If you are blowing any black smoke now, more fuel is only going to increase the smoke with little or no increase in power.
What you are shooting for is a very light black haze out of the exhaust at wide open throttle pulling a hill.
If you have that, you need more air before more fuel will help with power.
Dave: Have you ever seen melted pistons like I described? The tops were just eroded and rounded down to the compression ring. You could see the top ring with the piston in the bore. Seemed to be more on one side of the pistons than the other.
With your compression lower than stock, I imagine that dropped EGTs a bit. 'Course then you went and upped the boost!!!
I have seen them with holes in them in bigger engines.
And I have seen a few that looked rather sad in IDI's and Strokes.
I don't think I have seen any down as far as the top ring on the side of the piston though, the worst ones I have seen were more toward the center of the piston.
You are not going to believe this, I dropped my EGT when I increased the boost.
But part of that was how hard I mash the loud pedal at lower RPM's with the boost as high as I have it.
I only really stand on it at higher RPM's so I don't look like I am burning coal in it.
Well, if someone gets on my bumper with the high beams on, I might make an exception till I can't see the headlights very well anymore.
That seems to back them off a ways.
The cold ram air intake also dropped the EGT's a couple hundred degrees out on the highway.
One thing I can tell with these temps we have been having, air below 5 degrees gives me probably another 50 - 75 HP.
I need to give serious consideration to getting an intercooler worked in there somewhere.
Almost makes me wish is was 10 below more often than it is now.

Haha! love that! I do that too when i get someone with there high beams on or if they wont stop tail gating me.
