Engine stopped running suddenly, and wouldn't start again. I took the old fuel filter off, and it looks like it collapsed internally on one side, so maybe some junk got into the IP. With a new filter, fuel is pumping to the IP, but no fuel coming out of the lines at the injectors. I'm thinking something is either stuck or clogged in the IP. Is there anything relatively simple that I can try before removing the IP? It's the usual Stanadyne DB2.
There is a screen in the cone end......... But disassembly should be by qualified person with the IP off standing cone end up. The internal vanes will fall appart in any other position, also the metering valve may be plugged. I would suggest a rebuilt IP if yours has over 100K.
Thanks for the response. Could it help to try to move clean fuel backwards through the pump? I've tried by pulling a vacuum on the inlet side, but the fuel barely moves at all. Is that a sign of a clog, or is that like it should be?
Just an update: I removed the IP today and began dissassembly. (Thanks PLC for the links to the schematics; they were so helpful) Anyway, the screen was covered with trash, but not clogged. The problem seems to be that the rotor seized inside the hydraulic head; I could not turn it or remove it from the head. The drive shaft is broken, so I guess when the rotor seized, the shaft broke.
For what it's worth, I still think the root cause may have been the collapsed fuel filter. I looked more carefully at other fuel filters today, and most have an internal, perforated metal sleeve that prevents the pleated paper from collapsing inward, but the one I had in there did not have the metal sleeve. So, from now on, I'll be avoiding the "Luber Finer" FF816 sold by Auto Zone.
