turned up IP pump need help with timing
I turned my IP pump up 1/4 of a turn on my 93 F350 7.3 idi and need to adjust my timing. I don't know witch way to turn my pump and how much? Its still fires right up but don't idle as smooth as it did before I turned it up. Really need some help on this one!!! Thanks
is your engine turbo or n/a? do you have an egt gauge? you turned the fuel up about 2 flat sides of the allen wrench? along with the poor idle, does it smell rich? did you try driving it yet? is she rolling coal? was the truck running fine before you turned the fuel up? ............and why in gods name am i still up? lmao.i gotta go snow shoeing a bit tomorrow before the playoffs start.
go pats!

it don't have a turbo, i don't have a egt gauge, ya i would say two flat sides of the allan wrench. It does not smell rich, I did drive it and it only smoked at the bottom side of 4th gear, it has a zf5 trany 5 speed. It was idleing really good before i turned it up, its not running ruff but i can hear a little bit of differance in it. I read an article i found on google and it said if you turn your pump up it makes the timing off and you have to reset the timing so it will run correctly. If I get the timing set correctly and the smoke don't clear up quite a bit then i will turn it down 1 flat side of the allen and try it there. Because I don't want to pour fuel out my exhaust pipe, it cost to much. Im use to timing a gas engine by ear, I'm assuming I can't do that with a diesel because oil will go every where? I'm guessing that I need to advance the timing since I turned the fuel up?
there is a member on oilburners.net who rents timing meters.his sn is "icanfixall" it would be worthwhile to check with him about renting a meter.it's not really anything you want to try and do by ear.iv tried it a few times, and it's no easy feat.i completely failed actually lmao.
when i installed my turbo,i turned the fuel up a flat and i had to retard the timing to put it back where it was.
did you notice anything at all for a performance increase cranking her up two flats? if not,you should really consider just turning it back down.it's not the the wisest thing to do for engine longevity,to crank up a n/a idi especially without monitoring egts.the engine could be very short lived.if an n/a could handle 2 more flats of the fuel and run correctly, then we wouldn't add turbos and intercoolers to do that right? use extreme caution.you could have very, very high egt's right now.not know it,and end up with a dead engine before winter is out.

It sounds better today than yesterday when I turned it, and I drove it and it didn't smoke near as much. I'm gonna try to put a video on here so you can hear it run and see if you think it sounds ok
When you turn the IP up, you'll need to retard the timing. I strongly suggest that you turn that IP back down until you get an EGT gauge. These N/A engines can and will get hot quick with the fuel turned up. Your EGTs will be hitting 1200+ degrees and you won't know it. Very dangerous for your pistons.
