So I'm starting my search for a new (to me) truck and I know I want a 95-97 F250HD or F350 with the 351 and auto trans. I currently own an 86 F250HD with the 351 and C6 auto and the drivetrain has been great. My only concern with the 95-97 model is the auto trans - the e4od. in fact the reason I am limiting my choice to a 95-97 is because of the e4od. Per the link below, the 95-97 e4od's are better than the earlier ones. Baumann Engineering - An Introduction to the E4OD Transmission should i be concerned about this? I've read a decent amount of bad press on this transmission. but being I want a 351 motor, that means the transmission never saw the abusive torque of the 460 or the powerstroke. not to say a 351 couldn't do some damage, but its less likely than if it was behind a bigger motor. and i want 4.10 gears too, so odds are the lower ratio in axles would put less stress on the trans than say a 3.55 or 3.73 ratio.so given the year and drivetrain of the truck i am after, should i be leary of the e4od? I really don't have a choice as its the only auto trans in the truck i want - i just want some thoughts from you guys....
well i had the above post broken out into a couple paragraphs to make it easier to read, but i guess i lost the formatting when making the post for some reason... sorry about it being all lumped together like it is....
I had a '90 bronco 3.55 gears locked. I had the thing for twelve years had it rebuilt two years after I bought it at a reputable shop they also made all the upgrades that made it weak. Additionally They put a new valve body with better shifting and a hi-po converter at my request it cost me $3800 but it was done right. I told them I tow a little but like to offroad more than anything, they suggested I put a Aftermarket cooler and filter in addition to the filter inside. I did. Ten years later and 160,000 miles I had not one problem. I kept the fluid changed and maintained it well. Unfortunatly I had to part it out because the body just fell apart from this wonderful northern salting!! Now I'm looking for a 78 or 79!

The C6 was available with the 351, 460, and Powerstroke through the 1996 model year. They are rare, but they are out there. You'll lose 3-4 MPG compared to an E4OD.
