I am retrofitting a 91 model e4od into a 67 ford truck. It is a 460 and the requirement for a tailshaft driven speedo was the primary factor in choosing the early build transmission. I have verified the transmission still has an E9 pump, long input shaft(which means original OD planteries). It was freshly built with low miles and reman converter. I doubt it has any upgrades done to it internally. I would like to upgrade the front pump and just bolt the transmission in. I really do not want to scatter it. I will be installing a Baumann valve body recal kit and using their controller. I am sure most would not advise use without the upgrades. What exactly is the best upgrades and what can be used from the 4r100 ? I keep reading 95-97 e4od parts, then better planetaries can be found in the 4r100 ? The parts list seem to snowball as one upgrade demands another for compatability.
TCI tells you what they do right up front there, the others you have to read through it.
I see the issue--where do you quit when you start replacing parts. How warmed up is your 460? If you put a pile into the motor, it don't make sense to scrimp on the trans. But if it's mild, you can probably get by with minimal stuff like a $100 "valve body performance improver kit"....
My motor is what I consider the edge of compromise for a useful truck. It is 10.5:1 Dove heads w/ PI valves ported, roller rockers, hyd roller cam, headers, stealth intake. Its power band really starts at 2600 and goes until about 5500 or so, It is probably undercarbed for top end but driveability is ok with a holley 750. I have about 4k in the motor. Normally I would go all out with the trans but my finances and resources are somewhat limited now. I can tune around some of the weakness int the trans by unlocking the converter sooner to prevent slipping the clutch etc. As far as the OD planetary is concerned, I don't see it as a loaded item unless it is in overdrive ? So I avoid heavy throttle in that gear.. Any upgrades deeper than that are fairly involved and require near complete disassembly of the transmission. I think the pump to be a no brainer if I can r&r with a f5 unit. I also will be using the stock converter as a comparison on stall speed. It may be too tight for my motor. I think a stock 460 puts out more torque at low rpm than mine, however at peak torque will be a different thing. It is a shortbed truck at 4200 lbs. and I rarely pull much weight.
Ok lest put it this way the the 4r100 has upgrade parts in it that the e40d dose not but some of the parts in the 4r100 are made cheaper the are stamped not machined. But there are lot of better parts in the 4r100 then the e40d. I just had my tranny built i have a the good parts in the 4r100 in my e40d i will tell u if u do any hauling it is so nice.
