I have a 95 f-250 4x4 with a 7.3L powerstroke. My transmission overheated and bit the dust. I just got a transmission out of 97 e-250 with a 7.3L powerstroke. Are there any major differences besides changing the 2 wheel drive tailshaft to accept my transfer case? I am adding an aftermarket cooler and a temp guage.
You probably can't change the tailshaft housing and have it work. the output shaft is made for a driveshaft, not a transfer case and at the very least will be splined wrong, and probably the wrong length. The entire transmission needs to be disassembled to change it over.
I am not afraid of taking it apart and puting it back together. Am I going to be able to take them both apart side by side, keeping everything clean, swap the parts over or am going to have to buy a rebuild kit?
Like I said, the trans must be completely disassembled to change the shaft. IMO not worth doing. You WILL need some special tools to reassemble the transmission. Being not afraid, and succesfully doing it are two different things. Automatics are fairly complex and can easily be assembled incorrectly. You will at the very least need new center support bolts. There is no better way to learn though, so if you are up to it, go for it. I would rebuild the trans that came out of the truck, and use the Van Trans for parts in case something happens.
thank you aldridgec. I am going to rebuild the one in the truck. Although I have never done an automatic transmission I have rebuilt just about everything else. I grew up on a large farm and now I am an electronics technician in the Navy. I am going to get the rebuild kit and the manual. Thanks again for all of the advice.
There are a ton of updates, options and upgrades for the e40d. You can spend a fair amount of time finding lots of good info just with a google search. Check it out, and ask questions. I don't rebuild transmissions in general, but do have some knowledge of them, mostly the e40d.
