Major Problems with Starting System

1978 Ford F150 4x4 460

Problem: Starter keeps cranking over

New starter, new ignition switch and module, many new solenoids, new battery.

is there any kind of control unit in the system that could go bad and cause this??? What is inbetween the solenoid and the ignition module???

Lost and confused. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The next time this happens, pull the wire off the 'S' terminal on the solenoid, and see if it keeps cranking. Post back your results.

So you've essentially replaced everything and the problem still exists? That is interesting, as there is nothing more to the system. Unless you have a wire grounding out, possibly the "S" wire as stated above?

Ignition switch. It's got 12 volts going to it. If it shorts to the start circuit than you have completed the start circuit without turning the key. Just a thought. I had to test mine recently. I had the luxury of having an extra switch lying around so I just unplugged the old one and put this one in and turned the key. If you have a volt meter than unplug your ignition switch and and look at the terminals. They will tell you what is 12 volts going in and the circuit it goes out to. Put it back together and try a continuity test. This should test the switch and the plug that goes into it. Of course if you see any melted plastic than, well you know.

have you check the wiring from the ignition switch to the s-terminal on the solenoid. i have had the issue of it getting shorted to power on one of my friends vehicles. that is where i would look do to the fact that it keeps cranking after you have replaced all of those parts. it may be that a mouse could have chewed the insulation off of the wiring

He He. Missed that one. However the plug that goes into the switch is the problem I had. Wound up cutting all the wires and replacing the whole plug as it had melted and shorted.

Do you know what caused the melting?

The only problem I had with the switch was if the dirt road had a bad enough washboard it would shake the switch and turn the truck off.

Talk about annoying when that road was my way home for 8 years.

Never figured out what the cause was. As a matter of fact it took me a while to figure out that it was the plug. All I remember is that one day I was driving down the road and I smelt what I thought was something electrical burning or getting hot. I looked down and didn't see any smoke or other indication so I passed it off as something in the outside air.

Try driving down the road with the heater on full blast with the vent closed off.

Whoa did that smell! I totally thought it was my brakes dragging it smelled so bad.
