2001 won't start

This forum has been very helpful with past problems, hope you can point me in the right direction again. turn key to start, no click, nothing. Starter works when jumped across solenoid. Replaced ignition switch module, no change?

2001 SD F-250. 4x4, auto, 125K mi. V-10

Thanks in advance for your help.

Basic Starter Troubleshooting

Starter works when jumped across solenoid.
Which terminals did you jump? You should be able to do two separate operations: 1) Battery feed to starter feed (heavy current) and 2) Battery feed to small terminal (low current).

If you can do both successfully, then you can be sure that the starter, the starter relay, and the cabling from that point on s good and that the problem is from the small terminal back to the ignition switch. If the second failed, you have a bad starter relay and you shouldn't need to go further on the list below.

Questions:

1) Have you checked to see if the shift lever is loose or if the starter will operate in the N(eutral) position?

2) Have you checked the fuse (underdash fuse F20) that's inline between the ignition switch and the starter relay?
2a) If the fuse is blown, any recent service history, especially related to the exhaust or transmission?

3) Are there any aftermarket accessories for theft deterrence or a remote starter installed?

4) Does the instrument panel and any/all accessories power up properly when the key is turned from OFF to RUN?

5) Are any accessories known to not be working?

That will get you started. Go down the list IN THAT ORDER and see what happens.

.

Thanks for the response, still have the problem.

(1) Both Hi and Lo current jumpers at solenoid start ok.
(2) New shift lever installed week previous to not starting. Not loose and won't start in neutral either.
(3) Fuse F20 is good
(4) No aftermarket accessories or anti-theft devices.
(5) Instrument panel and all other accessories work ok.
(6) Runs and functions normally after jump @ solenoid. Drives completely normal.

Pull F20 and check with a test lamp or meter to verify that one terminal goes hot in start. That will confirm whether the problem is in the ignition switch or not.

If that test passes, then the problem is most likely with a maladjusted or defective DTR sensor on the transmission. The sensor is connected to the mechanical linkage to the shift lever, which, if not properly adjusted, won't put the switch into the correct position in Park and Neutral positions.

The other possibility is that the jumper for the clutch position switch was disturbed by a recent maintenance operation. Something to check....

The starter circuit is pretty simple: Ignition switch > F20 > CPP Jumper > DTR Sensor > Starter relay.
