Mine came off 6 months ago. I peeled the chrome off, sanded it down, painted it satin black and glued it back on(could not stand the glare of the sun off of it). It looks factory and the cap is still in place. There was no way I was going to pay the dealer for the whole shifter just to replace the broken off cap. Next to get painted is the chrome plate that goes around the base of the shifter.
Mine came off too. After trying to super glue the little tabs back on it and breaking them off again, I decided to glob some rubber cement on the thing and stick it back on. I've been looking for an aftermarket solution on the web but haven't found one yet. I may just chuck up a hunk of brass round in my lathe and turn out a custome cap of my own.
Hello Folks
I too have had this problem on my 06 Harley Edition. Except first mine the chrome cracked. Which cut my hand. Then it came loose. And eventually fell off.
I am looking into having some caps manufactured. We are early in the stages of prototyping.
So I have some questions if you guys wouldn't mind replying.
Question 1: Which would you prefer, Plastic, Plastic with Chrome, Or Billet Aluminum?
Question 2: I want to redesign the way it mounts. I don't like the way the cap currently mounts. Would anyone have a suggestion? Or would anyone mind like a set screw where they woul have to drill a hole in the shaft?
Question 3: How much would you pay? This isnt a question of let's make a deal. This would be for me to figure out manufactuering cost versus demand, versus marketable price? If I can't make them for what people are willing to pay then I need to forgo the operation. Me personally I would pay about $22.00
I too am missing my cap, its been off for probably 8 months. I am to the point of almost breaking down and buying the $70 assemboly. But a cap for 20, 25 maybe 30 for save me some time and money. I don't care about how it mounts, or what its made of. I just want one
On my truck under the cap there is a black cube that is molded into the housing that holds the trigger. I am Planning to have a piece machined with CNC so that it will mount to that cube. Either with small set screws or dum dum type epoxy. It will take some time to produce this where it can be sold. And so far I don't have enough demand to justify it. So don't wait on me but I do appreciate the feedback and will keep you guys up to date.
i had to order 1 for my bosses truck, its the handle and its a updated ****/handle.4l3z-7213-ba.60 bucks from the dealer.i tryed talking my boss into leting me epoxy a crown royal cap on,ofcourse he said no.

HiTekGuru,
Have you decided or started making your F-150 'custom shifter caps' ?
A friend of mine also had the same 'broken cap' problem, so I thought I would refer him to you if you had started your 'F-150 shifter cap manufacturing business.'
