Finally, I am back on FTE after a long year of saving to replace my Superduty. Enough about that...
I bought a 2004 FX4 supercab that was hit in the front, fixed it, and it is SWEET!!!!!!!!! I miss my duallie, but this truck is great!(will post before and after photos soon)
The truck is all done but one thing...it has the console shift, and the chrome cap to the shifter was missing when I got it. I ordered new one, and I got the whole assy. My question is: there is no staple or set screw that I can see,so how does this come off?? Do I have to pull the button out (opposite of its used dir.) to release it?
Any help would be appreciated.
thanks
I think the chrome cap is only glued on...or at least that's what I was led to believe when mine popped off a couple of weeks ago. I just reattached it with some RTV silicone and it hasn't moved since.
mine is off as well. from looking at it there are 4 little plastic tabs on the cap that attach into the rest of the shifter. how much did the whole package cost cause it is really starting to bug me after a year lol
This is what the service manual has to say about it:
Using a suitable tool, pry forward on the top of the selector lever button and remove the button.
Remove the screw, slide the selector lever **** up and remove the ****.
Remove the selector lever **** shroud.
I spent half a day trying to figure this thing out about a year ago -- I gave up.
This works just as good...take the new assembly you got and pop the chrome cap off of it.
Place cap on existing shifter assembly and wala -- you're back in business.
From my memory, there is no glue or anything, the cap just snaps in using four tabs around the edge. In my case, the old cap broke a tab somehow. I just popped the new cap on and I was good to go.
Thanx, I tried just pulling button out(not off) and pulling up. Good thing I am apparantly not that muscular or I might have broke it. Will do this tonite as it is bugging the crap out of me. Just got the truck back from body shop and looks great, get in cab and that missing **** just stares at me.
BTW, I cant just pop the new cover off the new handle and install. The genius who pulled the last one broke some of the handle itself.
yeah, that leather article was on another site that we can't name here...was really more about the guy sending it off to a leather smith...and then simply bolting it back in.
think it was on a Mark LT as well. way to dig up an old memory...been probably 2+ years since I've seen that puppy
