The chrome cap on the console shifter broke off yesterday. I am probably going to just glue it back on but that raised 2 questions:
1. Does this cap have to be removed if something goes wrong with the shifter in the future?
2. Are there any cool aftermarket shifters that replace the OEM one?
Thanks,
1. no. pull the button out and there is a screw behind it. unscrew that and the shifter pulls up and off
2. sorry, nothing aftermarket that I've seen. alot of guys have gotten custom leather wraps done though. they get it made about 1/8 to 1/4" too small in diameter and soak it in water so the leather stretches. then slip it over the handle and allow to dry. the leather contracts when it dries and they look pretty nice IMO. especially when you find somebody who does nice leather stitching
Having to replace mine, and it does not have a screw behind the button. Haven't found an aftermarket replacement, but hopefully the OEM replacement will be one with the screw.
I have seen some shifters on autoanything.com that they claim will fit out trucks. I have not yet sprung for one so I am not sure if they actually do or not but I hope too soon.
They claim these will all fit on our trucks. I have an account so when logged in all it searches for is parts for an F150 but websites are not always right.
Crome cap wasnt' the issue for me. It pops off, but that's just cosmetic. My shifter **** completely malfunctioned when the spring/pin plastic housing behind the button actually broke causing the pin not to pull the shifter rod up to release from Park. Had to get OEM for $65 b4 tax.
Coskid, don't think these will fit the 2005 shifter ****, for I don't see a side button on these.

If you read the details about it the button is listed. Most likely these are just a picture of the common model and it has some differences for the one for the truck. Also we could be looking at the back side and the button is on the other side.
